Does anyone know what this badge is for? My guess is a commerative for an aviation-related anniversary of some sort. It's made of a lightweight metal (probably aluminum), measures approximately 52mm high x 50mm wide, and has a screw-back attachment.

Any information on use and era would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

ИАС ВВС stands for инженерно-авиационная служба Военно-воздушных сил which translates into Aviation-Engineering Service of the Air Force. The aircraft, wings and colours confirm this is military.

50 лет means 50 years, so definitely a commemorative piece. This commemorative badge is to denote the 50th anniversary of the service.

I'm at work right now and can't dig any deeper. I'll try to find out more tonight from home.

Scott, Just joined GMIC after finding your query through Google. Your badge is most likely from 1994. I have a 2004 version for 60 years. Various articles published in Aviatsiya i Kosmonavtika during the Soviet years site the birth of the Aviation Engineering Service as 1943 or 44. Your's is only the second 50 year badge I've seen on the internet in the past 5 years. The other one was sold by a dealer in Finland several years ago. I've never seen a 10,20,30 or 40 year badge. The bulk of the AES maintained aircraft at regiment and depot levels. This officer heavy service was also active in military aircraft production plants and design bureau. Many of the famous Russian designers were Major Generals of AES. Closely associated with the Zhukovskiy Air Force Engineering Academy the AES covered all aspects of Soviet aircraft design, production and maintenance.
