    This medal was issued on December 22, 1943

    Cheers,

    Nick

    Hi Nick,

    Thanks for the info! I was looking around online for a Japanese calendar database/translator, and from what I found, the bar shows (if I'm reading this correctly): 日二十二月一十年八十和昭

    Shouldn't that be?: Showa Juhachi Toshi Juichi-Gatsu Nijuni-Nichi = November 22, 1943

    If I'm not translating correctly, please let me know! :)

    Thanks!

    Jason

    I forgot to ask, but would "Showa Juhachi Toshi Juichi-Gatsu Nijuni-Nichi" be the proper way to say the date?

    It's pretty easy Larry.

    Every bar contains three standard parts - year of epoch, month and day.

    Epoch

    明治 = Meiji epoch

    大正 = Taisho epoch

    和昭 = Showa epoch

    Year = 年

    Month = 月

    Day = 日

    So in case of every bar we have this stable construction:

    day (number) month (number) year (number) Epoch

    What are these numbers?

    Here they are

    1 一

    2 二

    3 三

    4 四

    5 五

    6 六

    7 七

    8 八

    9 九

    10 十

    11 十一

    12 十二

    13 十三

    14 十四

    15 十五

    16 十六

    17 十七

    18 十八

    19 十九

    20 二十

    21 二十一

    22 二十二

    23 二十三

    24 二十四

    25 二十五

    26 二十六

    27 二十七

    28 二十八

    29 二十九

    30 三十

    31 三十一

    etc

    Let's try it on Jason bar ;)

    日 (二十二) 月(一十) 年 (八十) 和昭

    Day (22) Month (11) Year (18) Taisho epoch

    That's it :)

    Cheers,

    Nick

    Ok, I know this is a Dark Navy Blue Ribbon medal forum, but I decided to ask here anyway... I just got this Blue Ribbon Merit Medal and wanted to confirm a few things.

    Recipient's name = Otaki Koujirou

    Date = April 29, 1965 (日九十二月四年十四和昭 = Showa Juyon Nen Shi-gatsu Nijuku-nichi)

    Also, what do the 2 kanji characters above the recipient's name represent?

    Thanks again!

    You get that right!

    "Awarded to"
