It's the Österreichische Sport- und Turnabzeichen. I do not know much about it but I do know that they are still going today & the awards are almost the same. Here are some images from their website http://www.oesta.at/de

It looks like my example is the Gross Bronze example. The attaching hardware is basically the same as a bronze DRL. I can only wonder why he isn't wearing DRL? Cheers Robert

Hi,

we can find a few pictures in a transitional period after the unification.

Later they had to change the decoration to a DRL sports badge:

Doehle 1944/1945: "Das österreichische Sportabzeichen, ... hat das Reichsportamt nach der Wiedervereinigung seinen Inhabern in das Reichssportabzeichen umgetauscht."
