Here a link of the Society "Los Sitios de Zaragoza" (The Sieges of Zaragoza), where you can see this year celebration. A extrange thing, that I didn't notice untill now: The renactors are spaniards but the real soldiers of the Spanish Army are not. Then, what they are conmemorating? This Spanish Army that in the Napoleonic Wars was invencible cause to defeat an army, first it is necessary to cacht this army, and the french were not enough rapid. (The Spanish Ulcer). Incredible, but certain.

Boris, thanks for posting this... This is a time in military history about which I know very little. I was surprised to read about the Maid of Zaragoza, Augustina, and her heroism taking over artillery and repelling the French.

She is very much like our Molly Pitcher in the US; the wife of an artillery soldier who took over his cannon during the Battle of Monmouth in 1778.

Hello Irish Gunner

Very interesting, I didn't know Molly Pitcher too. As it likes, she is a precursor cause Agustina is imvolved 1n 1808 and Molly therty years before. The target is the same: Liberty.

As less she were more effective, and you get freedom untill now. Agustina Zaragoza, that was from Barcelona is the most popular symbol, but the women fighting in the siege were much more, as the Countless of Bureta. All for nothing, Zaragoza was destroyed for a bit of glory, but freedom is still somewhere in the rainbow for her descendents. As you see in the photos it likes they have not notice this secondary fact and take a walk in Sunday in the city as play-actor, dress up of people, etc..., etc... Is a long story.

When I had a while I will put here some more material if you are interested.

Regards

Boris
