The photograph dates to October 11, 1948. Born in 1922, Paliy was a Guards sergeant serving as a mortar crew chief in a Guards mountain rifle regiment subordinate to a Guards mountain rifle division assigned to 3rd Mountain Rifle Corps, 1st Guards Army, 4th Ukrainian Front. He was recommended for his OGI for valorous action in Slovakia in December 1944. In addition to his three OGs, Paliy was also awarded an OPWII, ORS and BM during the war. When recommended for his OGI, he was a junior sergeant serving as a reconnaissance squad leader in a rifle regiment subordinate to a rifle division in 33rd Army, 1st Belorussian Front. He was cited for action in the Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation in April 1945. He was also awarded an ORS and BM during the war. With the opening bid set at $7,500.00, it sold for $8,250.00 (plus a 20% buyer's premium). A rare wartime photograph and information on this Full Cavalier are included in my book Onward to Berlin! Sale price: $91.01. As I've noted previously, one can still find Full Cavalier-related items there if one knows what to look for. The Full Cavalier who was awarded this OGIII was a sniper who had 194 confirmed kills during the war. He was a sergeant assigned to a rifle regiment in a rifle division subordinate to 5th Guards Army, 1st Ukrainian Front when recommended for his OGI for action in Lower Silesia in late February 1945. Sale price: 11,000 Euros ($13,076.80). The recipient was a senior sergeant who served as a T-34 tank mechanic-driver in a tank battalion subordinate to a tank brigade assigned to 3rd Guards Tank Army, 1st Ukrainian Front when recommended for his OGI. He was cited for valor in action while engaged in street fighting during the Battle of Berlin in April 1945. In addition to his three Orders of Glory, he was also awarded an OPWII and ORS during the war. Bob, It's an easy question to answer - no, there were not. The closest awards to Mongolia would have been the OGI awards to four Soviet soldiers for action against the Japanese in Manchuria in August 1945. As these pictures attest, there are indeed legitimate OGIs that are not brilliant gold throughout. The recipient of this piece was a Guards senior sergeant serving as a squad leader in an independent Guards sapper battalion subordinate to a Guards rifle division assigned to 5th Shock Army, 1st Belorussian Front when recommended for his OGI. He was cited for valor in action in the vicinity of the Oder River two days before the Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation commenced. He participated in the assault on Berlin and was wounded in action during street fighting in the city in late April 1945. In addition to his three Orders of Glory, he was also awarded a BM during the war. The recipient was sergeant major who served as an anti-tank rifle squad leader. He was assigned to a rifle regiment in a rifle division subordinate to 5th Army, 3rd Belorussian Front when recommended for his OGI. He was also decorated with the ORB and BM during the war and participated in the operations against the Japanese in Manchuria in August 1945. Note the deep gouges on the edge of the OGI's lower right point's reverse side. These crude gouges were made to verify the piece was indeed made of gold. The recipient was a senior sergeant serving as a 45mm gun commander in an infantry regiment and division subordinate to 60th Army, 4th Ukrainian Front when recommended for his final Order of Glory (an OGII in his case). Mistakenly awarded two OGIIIs during the war, it was not until 1978 that the error was detected, corrected and this OGI issued in place of the erroneous second OGIII award.
