hi all does anyone have any info on the issueing of these medals were they given for actual rescues or say financial donation all I have seen is for merit, pre war example, nice artwork on the obverse I believe today the society is called marine rescue and works with the coastguard

I think as usual - active work + quite possibly financial donations.

But I don`t have any hard facts ...

See this page for the current medals. The Special Merit Medal (similar to the one Mickey has shown) is given for donations of 200,000 yen or more. http://www.mrj.or.jp/commendation/index.html

Check out some of the other medals on the latter page. Given for hefty donations, etc. I have yet to see these in the secondary market.
