Mervyn Mitton Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 With a Forum the size of GMIC we tend to gather information from many sources. I prefer to write my own articles - however, I am convalescing at present and am making use of some good press articles. Ian Shepherd's ( a member) wife,Ann, often sends me a small bundle of press cuttings. This one I thought was well written and interesting. The original appeared in the Guardian newspaper and the writers' are credited in the article. There are two parts. Brian Wolfe Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Thank you for an interesting and informative article Mervyn. Regards Brian
paul wood Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I remember him very well, turned up after we sold him with his First Afghan War medal. I read his poem "On Balaklava Heights" to the London Medal Club at a members own. Paul
peter monahan Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 Yes, thank you for sharing that. I ave a fellow on the local WWI Honour Roll I'm compiling who appears to ave taken his own life and I'm not just sure how to deal with that information when I publish the roll. Always a touchy subject but, with our modern understanding of the mental costs of war, I think handled more compassionately now than in the past.
Mervyn Mitton Posted May 18, 2014 Author Posted May 18, 2014 I would describe him as ' Died on Service'. I fully agree with you that a little compassion is called for - how awful that the description should be on the roll for years to come. If he did commit suicide - what dreadful events led-up to that happening ? Best forgotten. Mervyn
peter monahan Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Mervyn That's what I've been thinking. Or simply 'Died - 1922'. two other names on the roll are of men who were invalided home and died here, one on November 23, 1918. So he'll be in company!
