Gday Paul, I have some information somewhere in the chaos of my desk about it, but i'll have to rely on memory. If i'm wrong i apologise!

It was awarded to troops who took part in the assault on the Duppel Redoubt on 18 April 1864, so it was more like a campaign or battle award. The official award version was struck in white bronze, and (this is really pushing the brain!!) there were just over 31,000 awarded. I remember an exact figure was given on another forum, but just can't quite remember it! :banger:

If anyone has anyhting to add to this, please do!! :D

    cheers Jason

    Gentlemen,

If I may, I would like to add a few more points regarding this medal.

Like many others of this type it was also awarded to non combatants, but on a different ribbon. Then there were two rather unique variations. First, this medal was also awarded to ?reserve? troops - again, the same medal but on, yet again, a third ribbon. Then there is the exceptionally rare iron variation made of blackened iron which was on the combatants ribbon. As I understand it, these were awarded to medical peronnel, clergy and civil servants.

A similar format was followed with the Alsen crosses, one of which is pictured in post #39.

    Best wishes,

    Wild Card
