Just found the following link for the one with the crown, so perhaps the non crown badge is for a pilot killed, but not in combat? "This very rare gilded and enamel badge was awarded by the Royal Air Force (usually by Mussolini or Air Marshal Italo Balbo) to the family of a pilot killed in aerial combat.
