My British awards collection

Recommended Posts

Hello all forum members

Happy New Year 2020 to all collectors. For the beginning 2020 I'd like to share pics from My British awards collection.

Please enjoy!

The Most Excellent Order of The British Empire Knight  Grand Cross of the order is interesting. Regarding to Sir Frederick Ponsonby (1867-1935) the first cases of issue were lingered : G.C.B.E. (all from June 1917) and renamed G.B.E. The reason was possibility of confusion between CB and the CBE. The one in My collection is the first model ie. G.C.B.E.

Hello Reinhard,

thank you for showing this very attractive collection of British orders!

I am generating a register of the Royal Victorian Order numbers with the corresponding names of the recipient. Would you be so kind and give me the numbers an names of the decorations with belonging papers you show, to add them to this register?

Thanks in advance,

Phenomenal collection beautifully displayed. I now have a bar set for me to reach. I too am a British orders guy but you got the goods. I appreciate that they are cased, I think that really sets them off well and makes the aesthetics statement. Thank you for sharing, it’s great to see such a collection well appreciated.

That is an amazingly focused collection.  Nicely done.  Are you missing any?

Hi Paul

Sorry for really late reply...sure I'm missing something. Military awards ie G.B.E.  G.B.E for Ladies and also lower MILY degrees. BEM medal for Courage, extremely rare but missing that as well. The collar and Mantle is also in My want list but not even in horizon to see.....

    • George Macdonald Fraser describes tea as "The British Army's cure for anything except a stomach wound."   Partial to Earl Grey, meself.  Used to be a tea drinker until Law School, where we had no cafeteria, only vending machines.  Awful as vending machine coffee is, their tea is worse.   Michael
    • Now it looks like I may see my exhibition for the first time in 19 months.   This year is the 65th Anniversary of the Suez Crisis, which culminated in Lester B. Pearson's invention of Peacekeeping, as opposed to Military Observers.   So the Museum will record a video of me discussing this.
    • I've never been able to stick to one theme.   One of my latest is women in the military.  For about ten years from 1952 to 1962, the RCAF actively recruited women to "man" the radar lines protecting against a Soviet attack.   During the Second War, women of the Auxiliary Territorial Service were attached to Royal Artillery Anti-Aircraft Batteries, called Mixed Batteries. They did spotting and tracking, plus communications, while the Gunners loaded and fired.
    • Two years down the line.   My mother-in-law passed away this summer, as did one of her sisters-in-law.   My exhibition opened, and we had a marvellous speakers' night with four Peacekeeping veterans, including a Meritorious Service Medal winner.  But Covid closed it down in March 2020, and while still there it hasn't reopened.
