    Hi Guys ,

I know books on West German awards and especially 1957 awards are rare as hens teeth so i thought i show a couple of basic references i have . I know there are more in the German language and our German member,s will add these .

    here goes !

    Posted

Here was my first and only reference book on 1957 awards by Jamie Cross and Gordon Williamson , a good basic reference showing a picture of most of the awards running to 49 pages .

And here is my second reference on 1957 awards :

A CD-ROM which i picked up very cheaply on Ebay about 2 years ago , basically a German language data base on awards from WW2 but the pictures are all of the 1957 type awards and also handily shows the ribbon bar equivilant of each award .

    Hi,

I've been meaning to add this for a while. A reference in German published in 1958 which covers all "official" awards of the time, including WW1, 1957er re-issues and Bundesrepublic (West German) awards.

    Regards

    Mike

    Hello

Here's another that covers German awards from 1870 to the 1990's, and includes the 57 reissue WW2 awards and West and East German post war awards. ?19.90 on Amazon.de. The prices in it aren't particularly accurate, even though the book was only published in 2006, but a decent quick pocket reference book - it's A5 size.

Thanks to Gordon Williamson for pointing this book out to me.

    Gents,

Some more books dealing with West German, and post west German, uniforms and awards. The first book covers modern West German awards but does not have a section for 1957 awards. It was first printed in 2003. My copy is a 2004 reprint and may be updated from the original. There is a new recent edition now avaialbe on ebay.de etc.

    Regards,

    Gordon

This book lists awards by the Federal Government and by each state separately. For those in terested in an earlier thread about fire medals in West Germany here is a picture of one page from the book.

The last book I will post is also from 2006 and deals with the Bundesgrenschutz (BGS). An area on which there is virtually nothing in print. Since the BGS no longer exists this is becoming a rapidly growing field of collecting in Germany.

    Gordon

    Hi Steve,

the brochure is from 1956, see the date 1.2.1956. But it is later, because the rank insignias for officers changed from the "altgoldenen" pips to the "chromfarbenen" pips in July 1956.

And I think it is the first edition with the title ...der deutschen Streitkräfte. On the later edition you can find ...der deutschen Bundeswehr.

Hi, thanks for that Uwe, it is indeed titled "Der Deutschen Streitkrafte" (the pre-BW official term for the German armed forces), as for the pip colours, I need new glasses !

    Prost ! Steve.

Why new glasses? See page 9, "Heer und Luftwaffe Dienstgradabzeichen Offiziere"

In my brochure I can see silver rank pips for Leutnant up to Oberst.

Here are the first rank insignias (Major):

And one more new book on the early years of the Bundeswehr - just fresh off the printers...

    ES BEGANN IN ANDERNACH 1955-1958

Eine Bilderreise in die frühen Jahre der Bundeswehr

A Pictorial Journey into the Early Years of the Bundeswehr

The case-bound books has 208 pictures on 136 pages. All pics are taken by a professional press-photographer. It has beautiful shots of uniforms, weapons, vehicules and everyday-life of the German soldier...

The text is German and English and the retail price in Germany is € 29,80 (ISBN 978-3-932077-38-8)

Gordon will know it - he has had an eye on the English translation.

I am not the author (just the publisher).

    Gentlemen,

My copy of Jens's book arrived yesterday afternoon. For those collectors interested in how uniforms were worn at the very beginning of the BW this is a "must have" book. I am not saying this just because my wife and I edited the English text. I always new this would be a worthwhile addiition to any BW collectors library. I waited to recive my copy of the book before commenting on it because Jens had said that the printed pictures came out much clearer/better than the digital images we had been working with during the drafting of the text. He certainly was right there. Jens needs a big hand from all BW collectors for the time and effort he put into bringing this book to completion.

    Regards,

    Gordon
