The standard Austro-Hungarian ribbon bars of circa 1916-18 were 40mm wide single ribbons--the same width as full sized trifold ribbons with awards. These were normally snapped or clipped over individual overlapped loops sewn on the chests of tunics when full-sized awards were worn--see image of reverses.

Because so many awards used the same "Bravery Ribbon" (top row here), devices were a logical solution--but without official regulation that has been found.
