    1. Hi!

According to the book "Finlands frihetskrig år 1918" (Theslöf, Ignatius, Palmén, Soikkeli, Grotenfelt, Nordenstreng), in book 4 on page 193, there were two officers from Norway that took part on the white side in Finland 1918.

I believe I've found one - Lieutenant Paul Holmeskog, Nylands Dragoner. I attach a picture from Harald Natvig's book - Holmelund is in the front.

But who can the other officer be? Anyone from Norway that know this?

There might be a book that can help out, but I don't have it: "Finland 1918 – Den finske borgerkrigen og nordmennene som var vitne til den" (Mårten Jentoft).

      Regards,

      Stefan

      Hi Jonas.

You're welcome to a private tour should you come to Copenhagen!

But it seems you're somewhat into the Bravery Medals, beautiful selection you have, do you know if it would be possible to ID these two groups?

The ribbon mounted one was bought from Mynthuset appr 30 years ago, at that time I was told they came from the estate of Hjalmar P:son Janek but I have ben unable to get this confirmed by photos, lists or other sources, is it something you have some info about? I believe they had his fullsize group as well which were sold before I visited them. I understand that very few, less than 5, were awarded with crown around 1890-1900?

      Regards, Lars

I don't know if this has been solved in a later answer but I also believe that the first mini medal bar might belong to Nyström. I found a notice in https://xn--portrttarkiv-kcb.se/advancedsearch

    3. Here we go...

I found him in Mannerheim's Day order (dagorder) numer 60, page 2, §6.

"Följande Herrar Officerare, Deckofficerare och manskap tillhörande den tyska krigsflottan belönas för tapperhet och
      rådighet med:
      Frihetskorsets I klass:
      Kontre-Admiral Hartog.

      ...

      "

He got the first class of the liberty cross and I assume that it was with swords.

      Regards,

      Stefan

    4. Here is another miniature bar.

To a Swede in Finland 1918 and one medal is for the conquest of Helsinki - not Tampere as one would think!

That leads us to that the man that got it most certainly served at the Swedish legation in Helsinki.

But as JohanH recognize above - the lists doesn't always fit the medal bar 🤬

My list of people that were there in Helsinki 1918 is so far:

      Karl Sigurd Fredriksson af Ekström
      Nils Leon Jaenson
      Henrik Leonard Lagerlöf
      Knut Karl Folke Malmar

...but their decorations do not fit the one below. Some of the foreign orders can come from the nations that they helped out during 1918 in Helsinki or from a attache career after 1918.

      So, any more suggestions?

      Regards,

      Stefan

    5. Aha, that's great that you got the red cross from a list. Is it from 1918 of WW2?

Otherwise I would have had a couple of runner's up for you  🙂

I found this text regarding his wife Emy (since they lived on Lidingö):

      "

      And another one:

"Den 9:e november 1939 var dåvarande rikslottachefen fru Maja Schmidt här ute på
Lidingö. Hon klargjorde for oss en lottakårs arbetsuppgifter och hennes ord förklingade inte
ohörda. Enhälligt beslöts av de 100 församlade Lidingö- kvinnorna a en lottakår skulle bildas på
vår ö. Fru Emy Hildebrand blev kårens initiativrika och handlingskraftiga förste ordförande.

I went through a lot of different Rullor and he is a perfect match in 1950 (if I remember correctly, it could have been a earlier year). I still have not found any one else that fits.

...so I guess it might still be open for further research?

Does the silver medal have any information on the back?

      Cheers,

    7. Hi!

I bought this little group a year ago and I thought it would be interesting to do some research about it.

For some reason the Swedish coppersmith Nils Johan Alfred LIDBOM (1880-1964) went to the Belgian Congo and served there between 1905-1930 (according to the auction text).

      He was decorated:

The Service Star, in gold. (from what I believe it should be)
The Royal Order of the Lion, in gold.
The Commemorative Medal for the Congo.

With the group was his navy badge and a commemorative medal. Can anyone enlighten me regarding these two?

I actually found his name in an article in L’ECHO BELGE, 1918-01-24:
      https://nieuwsvandegrooteoorlog.hetarchief.be/en/pid/mk6542kg5q
“11-17 novembre 1917. Lois, arrêtés royaux et actes du couvernement. Ministère des colonies. Ordre Royal du Lion. - Nominations. Voulant donner un témoignage de Notre bienveillance aux personnes désignées ciaprès; La Médaille d’Or de l’Ordre Royal du Lion est décernée à:

Lidbom, N.J.A., contremaître de la Marine”

      And when google translates it:

“11-17 November 1917. Laws, royal decrees and acts of government. Colonial Ministry. Royal Order of the Lion. - Appointments. Wishing to give a testimony of Our benevolence to the persons named below; The Gold Medal of the Royal Order of the Lion is awarded to:

      Lidbom, N, Navy Foreman”

He is also mentioned in L'indépendance belge, 1917-12-22, with the same list.
      https://nieuwsvandegrooteoorlog.hetarchief.be/en/pid/6q1sf2n81p

In the newspapers there are several more persons listed that got the award and I found some more Swedes, Finns etc. I will try to compile the list of names and post it here. When you download the papers you get XML-pages with the text, but my own OCR program did a better job.

      Regards,

      Stefan

Unknown NCO. Probably a navy guy since alot of russian medals went to naval personnel.

      Hi!

The Russian Tsar visited Stockholm in 1909 and many awards were handed out. So this could be to a NCO in the receiving regiment - one of the Stockholm regiments at the time.

The first one probably belonged to a Swedish doctor who made some effort in/for Finland during the war.

Any year on the back of the Finnish red cross medal?

Could also have been a doctor serving in 1918 and then helping out the Finns in Sweden during WW2?

I'll see what I can find...

Nick, sorry for bothering you again  :)

      Do you have this book?

I found its content list online and there is a chapter with "Alphabetical list of holders of the Order of St. George and the St. George Arms, awarded during the Civil War of 1918-1920" (Google translate from "Алфавитный список кавалеров ордена Св. Георгия и Георгиевского оружия, награжденных в период Гражданской войны 1918-1920 гг.").

Could the "St. George Arms" be the cross given to the lower ranks?

There were a couple of Swedes that served in the Northwest Army that I would like to see if they are mentioned there. Also an Otto von Knieriem got a cross during the civil war in the Northwest Army - he was in the staff of General Goltz and also later worked in Stockholm during WW2.

You will not find him in any lists of St.George order cavaliers since he was awarded (as corporal) with Badge of Distinction of the Military Order of Saint George /known after 1913 as St.George Cross) that was established in the February 1807 decree of Emperor Alexander I as a reward for  lower ranks (soldiers, sailors and NCOs).

Thanks for the info - yes, I started to think it was that way.

Are there any public lists available for those recipients in the Napoleon wars?

      Hi Nick!

Do you know of a PDF version of this book? It's so old so I guess the copyright is no longer valid. I would like to OCR-scan it so I can search in it.

    13. Hi!

I am trying to confirm some of the Swedes that got the russian St George cross in 1813 - but I can't find them.

      https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lista_över_mottagare_av_För_tapperhet_i_fält

I found the first book mentioned above online:

      https://kp.rusneb.ru/item/reader/v-pamyat-stoletnego-yubileya-voennogo-ordena-svyatogo-velikomuchenika-i-pobedonosca-georgiya-1769-1899-g

But I can't find "Anders Fast" in 1813 that should have its last name spelled as "Фаст" in russian. Is the book mentioned above about the order of St. George or about the cross of St. George?

      Regards,

      Stefan
