The whole campaign doc. Jacques idea of the Spanish sending a batch of pre-dated forms to Germany sounds about right. The info I did find on Muller here was that he arrived in Spain in January 1939 with 1.K/88, so the 30.9.38 dated Cruz de Guerra was grabbed off the stack and filled in.

I got this as part of a nice large group that includes his SC in gold doc, EK1 & 2, bomber clasp in all 3 grades and East medal.

Hi Matthias, I found a little info on your man, he was assigned to 2.K/88 in February of '39 though he had been in Spain since Nov. 1938.

There was a Uffzs Gunther Wagner assigned to 3.K/88 in November 1938. Probably the same guy, just a typo in the name in the book, the dates match up and sound right.

Great stuff, do you have any of his docs with all this?

I agree with you, the faces on the eagles are so close I have to look at the wreaths to know which is which. Very possible the same person did both the dies.

Hi Scott, interesting exercise, going by the general guidelines in Bender's Legion Condor book, those awarded this badge were also given the SC in gold. The count on the WA site is 1126 SC in gold awarded. Throw in the 28 diamond winners and that's 1154.

I have also seen in some collection displays that those KIA in Spain had the SC in gold presented to the next of kin. Since that seems reasonable, subtract the 315 KIA and that leaves 839 with the Merito en Campana. With 26116 SC's awarded in all 6 grades, there would be a little over 3% with this badge. Of course if it was given to the next of kin of the ones killed the % would go up a little, I don't know if it was or not.

But at the same time, looking at some of the pictures Jacques has of the SC being worn and at least two of those show white military service crosses on medal bars (which I would think they should have a silver SC without swords), they clearly have a cross with swords!! So with all of this, my little number crunching could go right out the window!

Some great pictures you have Jacques. I have a question about your latest one with the NCO wearing the medal bar. It looks like the white (non-combatant) military service cross on the bar but the Spanish Cross sure looks like it has swords.

I would have thought with the white service cross he would have had the silver cross without swords, am I right or wrong??
