That is the standard group for the Waldeck fighter.
Nothing wrong with it.
4205 Silver Medals with X awarded during WW-1.
Put it in the Waldeck thread; so it could grow

This month seems to be a terrible one for the German troops in northern Afghanistan
Since 2nd April 7 soldiers were killed and 13 wounded in three clashes with the Taliban.
These are the biggest losses for the German Bundeswehr on campaign in such a short period since the end of WW-2.

Hi Landsknechte,
the Waldeck Verdienstkreuz 4. Klasse mit Schwertern was a war decoration for junior officers (Leutnant - Oberleutnant).
The mentioned Otto Braun was a official in the civil service. For me that makes no sense.
There is no person of the name in the 1914-18 Waldeck list for these award.
Nevertheless a very nice group!!!

While searching the forum I found this old thread and the address of singidunum-online.
I was lucky to discover some Croatian documents in the shop, which I bought.
After receiving the lot, I have to praise the service of Ranko Mandic and can fully recommend him!

As I told above, no award certificates to collect for WW-1.
So I was lucky to get this nice document three months ago.
It is the certificate for the 2. class of the Waldeck Merit Cross to
Geheimer Regierungsrath Kirschner
awarded 14.02.1897 and signed by Fürst Friedrich of Waldeck-Pyrmont.

How about this one:
But maybe some of you have something to say about the China/Africa medal bar.
Both medals and clasps are of modern production.
I can`t understand why a serious collector is willing to pay a lot of money for such a crap
They get what they deserve!

I am still interested to know how this ribbon is most likely Reuss and not Waldeck. Was the Waldeck award very rare?
Matt
Hi Matt,
the simple reason is, that the Waldeck WAR TIME ribbon is white in the middle and only the CIVIL version is yellow.
Here you can see an example from my collection.
It belongs to Major Werner von Buttlar. He got the civil 4. class (yellow ribbon) before the war and the same with swords (white ribbon) in WW-1.
So whenever you see such a yellow middle ribbon WITH SWORDS it can only be from Reuss!

Hello Beau,
that is a nice example.
I think it is one of the few mint mistakes, which were not immediately melted down again.

I don`t know, but perhaps he has good connections to the East.
But in the last years he has had some of this pairs in his auctions.
For that they are so rare, he offers them pretty often
But hey - I am no expert in Bulgarian ODM !

As you perhaps know. all WW-1 War Decorations of Waldeck where made WITHOUT award documents.
So unfortunately nothing to collect for the Waldeck Fan for this period
Therefore I was happy to get my hands on 3 pre and post WW-1 documents to the winner of the Silver Merit Medal with X
Karl Vonjahr
Kriegsbeschädigter aus Giflitz
date of award: 20.03.1918 (page 88 in the Waldeck Roll Book).
First his Führungszeugnis for his National Service in the 6./ Inf. Regt. Nr. 83.
The signature belongs to Hauptmann Johann Peter Christoph Friedrich Bachmann, himself holder of the Waldeck Verdienstkreuz 4. Klasse.

I can add further interesting info for an WW-1 award in the Waldeck Roll (page 21).
The source is the history of the Infanterie Regiment No. 83 (The Waldeckers).
The said medal was the Ehrenkreuz with swords, which was awarded on 20.01.1915 to
Gefreiter Tambour (= drummer) 8./IR 83
HOY
for action fought on 16.12.1914 around Plichtow on the eastern front against the Russians.
After the town was taken, Gefreiter Hoy put an enemy machine gun out of combat. That was nothing special at that time, but the way he did it was exceptional
He went around the enemy, took his drum sticks and started fast to drum. The Russians were so frightened at the moment, that they rose their arms and surrendered to him !!!
Now - that`s a story
There is a Gefreiter Hoy shown in the Silver Medal section of Roll Book on page 54. He was awarded the Silver Medal with X on 07.12.1914.
I don`t know if the two are the same person. If so he got a further higher Waldeck award.
If not he started immediately with Waldeck`s highest award for NCO/Men.

Mossop,
indeed, that is a fine piece of a medal
Unfortunately casualties are soo high priced today, that it is nearly
impossible for me to pay them!
I`m stil hoping for the "lucky find"
And Ulsterman - thank you again for the info and the picture.

Hello Ulsterman,
thank you for the report about the Uhlans at Waterloo and the picture.
