Hello all, an update, royal mail now says item was delivered on 15/6/2010 (just contacted 'signed for' office this morning), but no word from Andrew, I'll have to wait for my credit card statement see if he has reimbursed me or not.

    3. No, I would'nt restrict this to firemans rather than police, & perhaps the hook & eye scales have come adrift from the ends of the chin scales, leaving the leather strap & buckle which would be there as well as the "hook & eye".

I'd leave the chin scales well alone, don't replace the leather.

If I were you I'd ask a moderator to move this thread into "Imperial Germany" in order to get more contributions, & post a new "wanted" thread here.

2 chinscales have fallen off, 3 are missing anyway, so I think something ought to be done, the rest will fall off eventualy.

How do I ask a moderator?

    4. Just put one thread in the middle, through original holes, to hol;d the peak in place for display? Sounds like it would leave a gap between peak & shell.

I suppose what you do is down to how you view the state of the helmet, if it's too far gone to carefully preserves & more a case of do what's necessary to make it look the part, I suppose.

Ah, I've only just noticed that your helmet does have a bead around the rim, complete with correponding cut-out in the rear spine, as per the helmet in the link, & as per, without a rear spine, my fire helmets.

Yep, just taken it out of the display cupboard, bead is there alright, the front peak rivets are not later additions, so peak and dome are comtemperary[wheres the spelling thingy?] So it could be a firemans helmet then? is that why the chinscales join with a buckle instead of the 'hole and hook'?

Some of the chin scale steel 'rivits' are falling apart now, they are so rusty the brass scales just drop off, make completly new leather backings? I have plenty of nice soft 'orthopedic pearl' leather, thin too.

    5. The seperation of the peak & helmet shell don't necessarily mean that they were'nt mates originally as the leather is liable to have shrunk, I have a pikelhaube whish I'm happy is original in terms of peak & shell, but the peak hangs down so far at the front that theres blue sky visible between it & the shell.

Let's see if the people who really know about these things join in discussion.

I hope so too! the thing is with the peak and shell is that if I try to sew them back to-gether as they are, the end rivits will be in the wrong place, it looks like the shell would have to be stretched to fit the peak.

    6. Just an observation - the helmet that you have has the "normal" front & rear peak arrangement, whereas the one with white metal fittings on the web site I posted the link for in post 2 has the raised bead of leather at the loin of peaks & body, a feature on one or two of the fire helmets I have.

hello, perhaps that join is a feature of firemans helmets? and only for firemans helmets? from the way the peak on this helmet is hanging on, I think it might not be original to it, as the 'dome' has shrunk well away from the peak, and no bits on peak sewing cotton remain anywhere, as well as being a 'wreck. its aslo a 'parts' helmet?

    7. Not my subject, although I have 9 army pikelhauben & 4 or 5 fire service, all low end pieces, but are you sure it's a police helmet, rather than army?

I have much a battered Bavarian helmet which was purchased as an officers, but I think it's probably a NCO's, I have to get a grip of that sometime.

Hello. according to all the sites I visited, its a Bavairan police helmet, shape of the spike, the rossette on the left hand side, all seem to point that way, nice pictures by the way.

      regards
