    1. Hello Gordon and Rick,

The jacket has no award loops, and I can not see any evidence there ever were any. From it's condition it appears it was worn very little. I really appreciate all of the information.

      Best Regards,

      John

That is indeed him. Heinz-G?nther Carl? was born 29 November 1914. Joined the navy with Crew 1934

F?hnrich zur See 1.7.35 and as of the 1 November 1936 aboard "Deutschland" so he was possibly there when the ship was bombed in Spanish waters in 1937. Are there loops for a Spanish Cross on the jacket?

Commissioned Leutnant zur See 1 May 1937 so this was, typically, getting his wardrobe in place for that happy event, and the rank and time still Oberf?hnrich fits.

In 1937 after commissioning he was in the Schiffstamm "Schlesien."

1 January 1939 resident in Leer with 8. Schiffstamm Abteilung.

      Oberleutnant zur See

      Kapit?nleutnant zur See 1 April 1942 # 29.

Survived the war and retired at that rank.

Interestingly enough, in all the MOHeV directories I have between 1960 and 1991 (my latest edition) he is shown NOT as "Heinz-G?nther" but as

      Henry G. !!!

He lived in Hamburg 1960-91 (at least-- still alive that year). 1960 and 1963 as H?ttenbetriebskaufmann for Firma Kupferh?tte Ertel, Bieler & Co. 1980 has him as "General Bevollm?chtiger" at Ballindamm II, but doesn't show for what company.

His wife Elisabeth n?e von Hobe, born 23 March 1910, apparently died between 1985 and 1991, for she is not liisted from the one edition to the other, and he had moved to a different address after being at the same one for at least 25 years.

    2. Hello All,

I was just sent this submarine combat clasp. It appears to be all original to me but I just can't get past the small circle that is located where the crossed swords meet. There is a corresponding mark on the reverse as well. I have not seen this mark, or flaw, on any other sub clasps. I got an expertise of authenticity from Detlev with this and I'm attaching a scan of that as I can't get the same resolution with my equipment. Can anyone give me their opinion on this?

      Many Thanks!

      John

    3. Hello All,

Just a short follow up on this Kriegsmarine sailor. I corresponded with Malte Gaack who is currently writing a detailed history of the Bismark and the crew, He advised that Heinrich Neuschwander was one of the only two sailors ever recovered from the Bismark. His body was recovered by the Spanish cruiser Canaris and buried at sea. Mr. Gaack has a website at www.diebismark.de/eindex.html if interested.

      Best to All,

      John

    4. Hi Rick,

I checked the website KBismark.com and Heinrich Neuschwander is listed. I didn't realize there were so many men on the Bismark and so many that didn't survive. I wonder now also how long the family had to wait for the information concerning the survivors. I would imagine that during wartime, especially in the T.R., information was very slow in coming. I will try to find out more concerning Heinrich and if sucessful will post it here.

      Best Regards,

      John

    5. Hello Rick,

Thanks allot for that information, it's most appreciated. In the album there are quite a few Army related photos but also some RAD. This was the only Kriegsmarine related photo in the album. Could have been a family member, or a friend, not sure since the owner's name was not written in the album anywhere. At any rate it makes it more special since he went down with the Bismark and I will probably frame it and keep it in my Kriegsmarine collection.

      All the Best,

      John
