Yes, and with the move to the US this year it can go with the rest of the furniture!!!
That explains the postal charges............none to be upset about.

The War Merit Cross is a completely different award and not part of the Albrecht series of awards.
The Albrecht Cross is the lowest in the series then.

I understand now, the War Merit was lower than the Albert Cross and it came with and without swords. Just wanted to make sure I knew what I was searching for.
Thanks............

This one, so different in many ways. This one is described as a War Merit Medal:

That is the Albrechtkreuz with swords. The enameled ones are Knights Crosses (1st or 2d class).
Thanks Don, in what class is this Albert Cross, 1st, 2nd etc?
I've come across a bronze example also.
Was it considered just as a Albert Cross with or without swords and has no class designation? If so, was the use of bronze a late war example?

In what class is this cross? I know the swords donate bravery but I can't find a photo giving more info. I found bronze without swords and enameled with swords giving there classes but not this one.
Thanks

The fine line between expendable and just plain useless? :-)

It is worth pointing out that not everyone who had done MG training was the main man... for every Richtschutz there were half a dozen carriers... easily replacable, and worth less than a trained signaller.
If these MGK had all these expendables who were easily replaced as you stated, why not just fill those positions with artillerymen????

Plainly speaking, MG Abts had a few extra expendable 'gofers'............

Got a couple of neat items on the way lugerwise, didn't cost much but way cool.

I anticipate there arrival!!! Thanks for the warning!!!!!!!

Thats possible. Morse code is indeed a more difficult and longer training than MG.
I am guessing he was not kicked out, but rather they chose where he could do his most valuable contribuion.
and since he already knew Morse code, his transition would have been less. I notice that his time in the MGK was only a few months. He did train and qualify with both the MG08 and PO-8 Luger. Interesting documentation.
I was thinking about adding it to my Signal Abt display but I went for these instead:

Hello Ed.
One possible clue is his civilian occupation which is listed as "Postschaffner" ( postal conductor). That I believe was an entry-level grade in the German Postal Service . Postal service also operated telephone and telegraph services in Germany and the signals branch of the army belatedly got this man and put him into a related occupation.

Yes, I can see that happening. Thanks Bernhard.

Well, is it possible I can see there Fliegerabteilung 107? (bottom of the Soldbuch cover)
Morning Marcin......do you see anywhere where it says why he left the MGK and went into a Fernsprecher Abt? Volunteered out, kicked out, medical reclassified?

I'm not sure if I understand this one way or another.
Did this fellow start out as a Machine Gunner and then transfer to a Signal-Fernsprecher Abt or was he in a Fernsprecher Bn and attached to a MG Kompany? I came across another Soldbuch of a Fernsprecher in a MGK which was easy to see and understand. On this one, I see dates and some dates in the MG company are before any Fernsprecher Abt dates...........

When I see a document with torn corners, missing edges and there is a question about authenticity, I automatic think of the forged papers being done in the ghetto in Schindler's List. It makes me think twice....sometimes wrong.

Written in 1915, during World War I, it was published as a poem under the title "Das Lied eines jungen Soldaten auf der Wacht"
