Some thoughts on this one please?
http://www.derrittmeister.com/productpages/11422.htm
I don't think it is one I would want in my collection.

You see a lot of engraved badges like this on ebay,
that would make me cautious to start with.

PS ! You can also find Zimmermann "20" in green cases .
Have seen a couple , and I have one .
Jan Arne
I have only ever seen Zimmermann pieces in these rare green cases.

I cannot recommend "Der (politeness draws a veil)" at all for anyone beginning in this field. Great on self-promotion though he may be, his knowledge of BASICS is excruciating flawed, and anyone not informed to cherry pick (extremely overpriced cherries, generally) the gold from the dross is not going to have a happy transaction. Same category as Manion's of receding memory.
Thanks for your advice Rick, I consider myself very green with German Aviation badges and I am trying to learn as much as I can on the subject. I have always enjoyed looking through that website, bit like a museum, interesting pictures, interesting stories. There are a few little stickpins there at the moment that look good, however the Zeppelin mini stickpin appears to have come from the same source, do you know if these are faked?
Thanks for your help.

Considering how rare one of these badges would be that seems very reasonable price.

Has he even heard about the macro feature on his box brownie??

Seems fairly obvious if someone gives you pictures that useless they are trying to hide something.

Hello,
don`t know if there is a forum or if they are faked, but here you`ll find a book about Sanke cards:

Can someone please shed some light on Imperial Sanke Cards, Are there fakes of these in existence? How where these sold? e.g. like American cigarette cards? Are there any good forums or books that deal with these? I have tried doing a search on the internet but haven?t really come up with much information.

I have seen these open backed badges in many configurations, Genuine silver with frosting (which I sold like an idiot), Silver plated tombac (or neusilber), and silver plated iron. The seller on this one states it is silvered tombac, so it is silverplated. A silver wash is fairly thin and would not have lasted very long under service conditions. I have a silverplated two piece hollow badge from late in the war. It is not marked for silver content, but until I looked at it with a jewelers loupe, I had thought it was silver. The loupe brought out the tombac peeking through on the high points.

Guys thanks for your help, can you tell me if there are any good books available on the subject of WW1 German avation badges and awards?

Mr. Smith,
Unfortunately that seller does have a number of questionable badges. I have had very good experiences dealing with Emedals in Canada. They currently have a badge, like the second one Stogie posted, for sale right now for $750 US with a COA from Detlev. This may be a little high, but real badges are going up in price substantially. Here is a link.

Hi Daniel
That would looks very nice, do you know what the fnish that was originally applied to these badges was? was it a silver type wash, as it appears the badge you posted has lost most of its finish.
thanks

There are two very distinct styles. One with very little "mirror relief" to the reverse, one with much. There is some dissension as to acceptance of each example/style. In addition, they are currently reproduced in both styles. Again, caution is recommended. I would recommend finding an example of the second type I have shown as being the more accepted, 'textbook' style of badge.
Hi Stogieman
Thanks for your assistance, this is exactly what I was after, most of the badges I've seen around appear to be outright fakes or later produced badges,
Do you know how much a ball park figure for one of these would be?
http://www.derrittmeister.com/ sometimes has some badges but looking at their current offerings the only piece I feel comfortable with his the Bavarian Pilot's badge in the case, although the mini stickpins look quite nice and genuine as well.

Shouldn't von Richthofen also have received a wound badge for his near fatal head wound he suffered in July 1917
I understand the wound badge was not introduced until 1918, however wasn't the award also backdated for wounded soldiers?

Hello
Would someone please be so kind as to post some high res pictures of a stamped, hollow back issue Pilot's badge please?
I am looking for one and would like a benchmark to compare, thanks
