HUGE questions! There is an OMSA article about this topic and the OMSA Bronze Star monograph goes into great detail. Bottom line is -yeah-big differences. During the war specific machines were used and some collectors can actually tell which operator engraved the names by their 'writing' . War time issues tended to be for KIA or VIPs only.
the vast majority of these were awarded unnamed and lots of vets later had them privately engraved. I did my Dad and Uncles in the 1980s at our local trophy shop.
Fakers of course try to augment unnamed pieces wit names, but honestly a guy like Carson was brace, but obscure. Finding the details of his award would take real work and would cost more to research than to engrave. The " profit" is not there-at least for BS or GC or Merit medals.
REALLY REALLY THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!

1.It was the merit medal of south GANSU province awardes by Kung Fanjin ,between 1918-1926,In general, he is a warlord、dictator & tyrant
2. the ribbon is not Chinese ,its Japanese the order of rising sun
3.I havent see a red Enamel before

His obit. is found at "supersabre". He died in NV in 2015. My Dad knew him at Bitburg. He got his wings at age 16. Retired a Colonel in 1969.
Looks like he had the American theater ribbon and WW2 Victory medal, with the National Defense, (2 stars) , Korean War, UN Korea, Vietnam War and Vietnamese Vietnam campaign medals as well as the usual USAF service ribbons. I do not think he had the occupation ribbon and he was out before they started handing out excessive achievement medals.
He would have rated the Korean Korean War medal too, but they just started handing those out about ten years ago.
thanks so much for your information,I just have these medals and know nothing about Walter E.Carson, and as you know Chinese government locked many web such as Google,I hardly find more information about him

Quite an impressive set of gongs. I'm a little surprised that he didn't get a "V" for his Bronze Star nor Oak Leaf Clusters for his Air Medal. These medals (unmounted) have the look of being just out of the box. Perhaps he never had the chance to get all the doodads on the ribbons. Or perhaps it's a set of replacements after he left active service.
I THINK I KONW LITTLE ABOUT IT,ITS MY SECOND TIME BOUGHT USA MEDAL

I haven't seen any official numbers at all. I'll ask on a few Russian forums but don't hold your breath... They kind of lost control on numbers in the 90s. Add to that the fact these were also produced and bestowed in Ukraine, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Armenia...
thank you ,i‘m looking forward your information

Unfortunately it is not simple to research a veteran from WWII. here is the e-dress of the National Archives, but apparently one needs to know from which state the veteran came to make much progress.
Good luck.
thank you, I found the info

Why would this person claim a real medal was a forgery that he made? Makes no sense, does it?
THIS MEDAL HAD ALREADY authenticated as a real one by scientific verification in NWU, I think this man just want to buy this real medal in a forgery price , by the way now I clearly konw that this beijing guy is a forgery maker and he sold many copy japanese uniform、orders、medals、badges in China, and now he have a web shop in yahoo japan that sold copy medals,I hope everybody take care about that.
