    1. Hello Gents,

Well i ahve fallen in love with Victorian and Edwardian medals...and the research that comes with each peice...

So far i have been reasonabley lucky....

      Here is one beauty;

A QSA to a Casualty of the Scottish Horse

Severely wounded at Brakenlaagte 30/10/1901 whilst serving with the 2nd Scotttish Horse

      Shg.STH ( shoeing Smith) W.Bain

And another QSA with no clasps to a chap who was in WW1 and was killed/Died in Mesopotamia 14/7/15

aged 39 years leaving behind a Wife and kids. a Joseph. William.Francis. Warren

Was entitled to the following bars to the QSA

      TALANA

      DEFENSE OF LADYSMITH

      OFS

      LAINGS NEK

      BELFAST

Also was entitled to the 1915 Star, BWM and Victory medals also the KSA

Would love to re-unite his medals...However being a realist..it may never happen so am happy with the one link to his past..

      Enjoy!

      Cheers

      Paul

      PS: More to follow!

    2. Thanks Darrell!

      More developments,

I met a chap the other day, A David Gunby, who wrote the history of 40 SQN RAF.

He is currently working on another History which covers the Air group that encompassed 104SQN.

He promised to look up Mr Clark and see what he could find out about his service and about 104SQN service in the middle east.

So stay tuned! the wheels of research are grinding away!

      Regards

      Paul

    3. Thankyou Rick and Mike!

Well i had to 'Dig' up the other bits...as the seller originally was selling just the medalbar and the ribbon bar only...i did some 'research' and found the sellers phone number, and gave them a call.

I came straight out and asked them if there was any other items belonging to the man....

and they said yes they had the photos and some paperwork and some badges, they did not elaborate, i suspect they did not really know how to describe these items, i saked if these items would come with the medals and expalined to them the virtues of keeping the 'group' together.

They said yes, so i said, YES i will buy this set.

Turns out the Gent concerned's wife was a friend of the sellers mother and when he died the medals were given to the seller...i have no idea why...

I have asked them to find out some more about him...so will have to wait and see...

I also have set the wheels in motion to find out about his wartime service...and have got my Grandad onto it.

He is the Secretary of the NZ Brevet Club here in CHCH and has access and contacts to all the Aircrew associations in the UK and himself was a former Wartime Air gunner too! ( 547 SQN RAF)

So will certainly fill you in with any new developments!

Glad you enjoyed it! makes these medals so much more Interesting when you have some paperwork, and paperwork like this is a bonus, as he was definately involved in many facets of war!

And had his fair share of mishaps!

I am very pleased with this group!

You may wonder why i am delving into this world of collecting...( a bit different from Imperial German) but i had to have it...It was a group...and had a story to tell...and a story that could be Researched!

      Much more fun!

      Cheers Gents,

      Paul

    4. Hello Gents,

I have purchased this nice wee group to an ex Air Gunner from 104 SQN RAF

He served in the Malayan Police as a Police Leutenant no 677

Here are his medals mounted on a medalbar...very nice! excellent condition!

      1939-45 Star

Atlantic Star, Missing??? according to his ribbon bar!

Africa Star...Missing a Clasp...according to his ribbon bar!

      Defense Medal

      War Medal

GSM with Malaya bar Stamped on the rim..677 P/LT T.A.CLARK F.OF.M.POL i think it means Police Leutenant T.A.CLARK F? officer Malayan Police

      Whats the 'F' for???

      More pics to follow!

    5. Thanks Robin!.

One has to wonder why the fakers would go through so much trouble to make such a well detailed badge, then get the pins wrong...I mean.. that on the manufacturing side...the pins would be the easy part of the whole construction of the badge... :P

Another theory is that perhaps the manufacturers ( wartime) got some feedback from the Kreigsmarine that these badges rusted with sea air ( hence this one being brass)and snagged and came off easily due to the simple pin arrangement, so they made a special variation to combat these problems???

Or perhaps these variations are Manufacturers prototypes, and would have been on a display board, hence these ones being flat and with the different pin arrangement?? Hmm, food for thought...:)

Anyway i will go with the conclusions drawn by members more knowledgeable and experienced than I :)

Anither reason why i don't collect TR! :o

Many thanks for your input Robin!

      Cheers

      Paul

    6. Hello Gents,

this wee gem came in a lot i picked up recently...

Does anyone know anything about these?

the enamel is damaged a bit on the top and the other arms have lots of scratches...the ring attachment is slotted into the top of the cross in a recess then soldered.....the reverse is blank with breathing holes for the enamelling?

      Comment appreciated!

      Thanks Gents

      Paul

    7. Biro,

I studied my Wilm under a Loupe..and the smaller ring has a clearly marked '2'...and the core is different again...the crown has the tops curving towards the middle at the ame level as the sides of the crown..not like some of theothers which raise up slightly...

Sorry cannot post pics as i do not have a camera that can do this sort of close up...

Now i am gonna study all my EK's under the loupe now... :)

      Back! with my discoveries!!

Heres what i found from the EK's i could get at...the others are too tightly sewn to the bars!

One Marked 'MK' has and 'x' on the eyelet

one marked 'Z' has an 'O' on the eyelet..

Found another WILM..same as my other cross with same core details except that its got more paint on it..but no mark on the eyelet..

And found a 'we' marked eyelet on a cross too!

There you go...more ammunition of the databases!

      Cheers

      Paul
