Hallo Rick, <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cheers.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="cheers.gif" />
this picture is from my trip to the Romanian Military Museum in March.
Patriotic Guard Uniform, Grade unknown to me.
I will add a close up of the badges in my collection later.

Kev is this the same badge used on the mannequin at the museum

The lower I would say is post Revolution period
pre 1945 Buckles as far as I recall had a crown
rather the coat of Arms.
Kevin in Deva.
Yes The bottom buckle is current military insignia..it is the same as on the desert hat used in Iraq and Afghanistan.I think the seller of the bottom belt put the buckle with an RSR era belt or maybe it was issued that way using old stores .

Thank you for the photos ..You would think during this period of time it would be a RSR buckle..

Isn't it interesting that the colours used in the State seal can change so much from one example to the next... seems to be a complete disregard for continuity. Obviously not on the "Pantone Matching System" at that stage of the game.
Maybe a case of different facilities doing the enamel work?
On the Patriotic Guards insignia is that a red felt backing?

Ian,
Yes, your badge is Militie (Police) as well. The silver wash on yours has oxidized over the years, leaving it a darker colour. Also, I can see spots where the silver has worn off leaving the brass to show through. Keep it as it is! No shining!
The ranks that would have worn this cap badge are Locotenants (as Kevin said) through Colonels. Sergeants and Warrant Officers badges would have one row of leaves; below that, just the oval and seal (the seal would be stamped into the oval- no colour). An oval with an enameled seal would have been for cadets. Generals wore three rows of leaves, which were embroidered, with a silver-coloured oval and enameled seal placed in the center. Take a look at the thread "Communist Romania Cap Badges" for more of these.
Thanks Greg

I picked this nice example up on Friday 25th June 2010
of a Police / Militia Cap badge:-

For the rank of Locotenant.

What makes this a Police/Militia Cap badge, is it the silver color of the wreath? I have one a little darker color is this Police/Militia as well

It isn't, really. It's a hybrid-- a "personal" style mixing letter forms-- must be an "m" after the "u" with the old fashioned superscript squiggle over the "u," but that's not an old style m. Can't be sure if it ends with a flourish at the end, or that is a downstroke t or l.
Rick you were right....

Hmmmm... a RANK would have helped, since no telling how low "in deputation" this was and that makes a big difference.
Unfortunately there is no tellin where this one lands on the food chain...

he heeee I will sleep tonight unless the phone solicitors call offering me life insurance or the Noriega death squad bursts in thanks so much.... Mystery solved

Luckily for your sanity that is a nice clear legible signature of
Generalmajor (1.2.41) Friedrich Herrlein, born 27 April 1889 in Ehrenbreitstein, alive in 1958. Army 3.3.11 on
Yes, Generalmajor
Oh, it says "General der Infanterie" doesn't it?
Wellllllll, there is indeed a GOOD reason for that:
Herr Herrlein (whose brother the doctor discovered the fracture named after him )
held the position "General der Infanterie bei Oberbefehlshabers des Heeres" AS successively a Generalmajor and (1.9.42) Generalleutnant, per Keilig holding this staff JOB (not the rank, despite being the same words as the rank) from 15 February 1942 to October 1943.
And just to finally make it all seem completely normal, he did indeed make the RANK of General der Infanterie on 1 February 1944 while commanding the LV. Armeekorps(6.10.43-5.2.45).
A Knight's Cross winner.

Nans badge is commonly referred to as a lizard head and it comes in various reverse setups as well as various degrees of ageing and finishes and can be found dressed up as a G.H. Osang an C.E Juncker and W.H. Wien piece as well as being unmarked. These badges lack the detail found on an original Heeresflakabzeichen and are typically found being sold in great numbers on the internet for a small price as reproductions as well as being high priced as originals... let it be known Nan just because something is in a book doesn?t mean it is what it claims to be so be careful..
Nan I collect only the Heeresflakabzeichen and items related to it and I have nothing to gain from telling you this, but I would not have a W.H. Wien in my collection ?

Nan John is indeed correct these W.H. Wien badges are reproductions.
