    1. Dear JapanX,

The name of this medal is "民國國民政府武官勛章 / Medal of Military attaché of the Republic of China National Government" (I think). There are six of them :

I can't remember where and how I got this information, but it was in April 2016.

      Yours sincerely,

    2. Dear JapanX,

OK, so Ōhashi kinsei is link to the Japanese Red Cross medals.

And except the Japanese Red Cross medals, "大" is only found on this medal "大正三四年従軍記章" :

      image.jpeg.bff9329dffbacb8e8ae622a1945a6a9c.jpeg

May be one day we will find the answer !

Tracy, I don`t think this is "II".

This is a typical two-letter mark only it wasn`t punched well enough (shape of suspension ball wasn't helping either).

      Best,

      Nick

I have the same problem, can't say if it's "II" or maybe a "M" or something else :

And I have this Sacred Treasure third class with  "--美-" but the neck ribbon is very narrow, never seen somewhere else:

    3. Dear Gentlemen,

In his excellent monograph "Orders & Medals of Japan and Associated States" James W. Peterson wrote about the bar of the "1900 War Medal", I quote "... and the attached bar is of the usual form, with four seal characters translating "China Incident"". I think that the four seal characters stand for "Qing Dynasty Incident".

    4. Dear Gentlemen,

      Thank you for your interest.

I don't know if the lacquered cases are made of "kiri / paulownia". But the cases of the War Medals and Commemorative Medals of the Meiji and Taishō era and most of the other badges are. Of course, there can be some exceptions.

    6. Dear Gentlemen,

The  "kiri / 桐 / paulownia" is at the heart of the Japanese culture along the cherry tree. It's found on orders, decorations, medals, "mon" linked to the Imperial family, event the seal of the  Prime Minister of Japan .

The wood is used to make the cases of the medals or  precious items (and furniture, specially to store kimonos).

It's often, unfortunately, mistaken for balsa wood, a South-American tree.

This tree is in a little garden at the back of Reimeikan :

    7. Dear Gentlemen,

Another update. The Reimei kan medal, on the cover, was sold in an auction (for X millions¥) to a private collector and is now on display at the Satsuma Densho kan ( here ).

The second one is not displayed anymore at the Shoko shusei kan ( here ), but you can buy this :
