    1. Hello

      now an easy one:

      Circus Aliosha had several managers during the long stay in Eastern Germany.

      One of the directors had been awarded a very high decoration. He had the same honorary title as the lover of Miss Claretta Petacci.

      The installation ceremony takes place every five years. Where ? (need the complete name of the place)

      Who was the director?

      Regards

    2. Hello,

      I think we are talking about Mr. Adam Kellett- Long from Reuters

      He wrote it on Friday Aug. 11. 1961

      Mr Konev arrived on Thursday 10. to take over command

      Adam sent his report to reuters on Sunday 13. ( He found out that Border was closed late evening 12.

      His car which belonged to Reuters was a red Wartburg ( Unfortunately I do not know the number of the license plate it is weekend and the police station closed)

      Bonus 2 I cannot answer because I cannot ask Mr Ulbricht

      Bonus 3 I cannot answer because I have not Mr Kelletts telefone number but I guess he was happy about a livetime story knowing he was the first to tell the world that the border is closed.

    5. Blasted time zones! This was one I could have answered! And I have had a good question ready. Musn't sleep any more.

      Hallo Ed,

      for me it is not a matter of time zones. I live in the same zone as C. and C. Here it was a matter of drinking. so I have missed the last two questions.

      looking at the results of Cristopher and Christian we have to find out whether there is a red telephone between Vienna and Paris.

      I will ask our minister of interior to check that. :rolleyes:

      regards and bach to my drink

      Frank :cheers::cheers:

    6. Hello christophe,

      You are the winner.

      Nobody had answers on the secure communication line. This cable was under air pressure . If somebody damaged it it lost pressure. If it was moved the pressure went up. Very easy and effective. (I will try to get a few meters of it for my collection if I can find the building in which it starts.(I will take an old telephone with me and connect it to the cable. Perhaps I can make a cheap phonecall to Mr.Putin.) :rolleyes:

      Congratulations and it is your turn now

      Frank

      :cheers::cheers:

    7. hello,

      Scud - B is correct

      8K14 is correct

      The place is not correct. There was a tank division at the same place. ( the place was the most western location of ballistic missiles ) about 30 Km from the border. It was top secret and we did not know much about it.

      Regards

      Frank

      ( I will be back in about 4 hrs and look forward for the correct answer)

      :cheers::cheers:

    8. Hello,

      Here is one of the easy questions. Cannot always use Wicky sometimes have to use my brain.

      It's technologies, relatively simple and widely available, pose the most serious challenge to international control of ballistic missiles in the post cold-war world. Essentially a perfected V-2 (German) rocket, it was developed in the mid-1950s for the Soviet Army and improved to reach its most successful form in the mid-1960s. Unlike the V-2, it can be stored for years. It can be transported fully fuelled and set up and fired in 90 minutes. It has been used in the six regional conflicts since 1973 ... Currently deployed by at least 17 countries, it remains in production in North Korea. Despite its age and accuracy it can be mastered by emerging powers, whether they seek merely to deploy it operationally, to modify its capabilities or to reverse engineer it for local production....'

      What is it`s GRAU index?? (not NATO or US code) :rolleyes:

      The wanted item was stationed at the same place where a Tank Division was stationed ( about 30 km from the Inner German border).

      Where was it? :rolleyes:

      It was one of the most secret areas and there was a direct high frequency communication line to Moscow. The cable was covered with lead to prevent us from listening.

      Now the question for specialists:((Not necessarily to be answerd)

      How did the Soviets find out wheather somebody manipulated the line.? :unsure: ( No Wicky only brainwork !)

      Good luck

      Frank :cheers::cheers:

    9. Hallo,

      I have just found this topic. Very nice photographs. They do not show the signs which say that therere is a military area and it is not allowed to be there. :violent: If anybody decides to go there he should watch the signs. During my last 5 day visit I was checked by the police several times. The buildings are in a very bad state.

      One house collapsed while I was there (in another building). There are holes covered with leafs and grass. they are about 10 metres deep. If you fall into one nobody will find you. I have been there several times. The first time was in 1991 when the Soviets were still at work. Now I have been in every house and cellar. I took hundreds of photos. ( unfortunately I cannot post them because the machine says "Uploading" for several hours). In one building there were chalk markings on the floor showing a human body. The markings were not very old. If you want to stay alive you should not go there. The interesting things are all gone. Perhaps if I can post photos I can show you details from the place when it was still in action and from today.

      regards

      Frank :cheers::cheers:

      ( Important notice: I had permission to be there)

    10. Hello, after a long conference and spending nearly 2 weeks in ex Soviet camps I will try again to write about the contacts.

      After the fall of the wall I went to a small village in eastern Germany with our local Mini Cooper Club for a celebration. I had a few drinks too much and to get fit took a walk through the forrest. I did not know where I exactly was. Still beeing drunk I saw a wall with a big hole in it. There was a yellow sign which I could not read. I think it was an invitation to enter. I love invitations. So I had a look to find out more. Behind the wall there was a place where a lot of T-80 tanks were parked. Nobody was around and so I could not ask anybody for permission to take some photos. Walking around I came to an area where soldiers were doing theit marching. They all looked at me but nobody said anything to me. I did not recognize that I was the only civilian around. After a long time two young civilians appeared and asked a question. I replied in my best English that I do not speak their language. These men were no gentlemen. One put his fist straight into my stomach and the other one hit me in the face. Then the took me into a cell after taking my cigarettes, passport and camera. I do not exactly know how long I have been in that room with no chair and no light. Here I had time to think about my live. I thought about the warning of a British officer. He said that I will have a lot of problems if I get caught. And he said that I will never come back if the Soviets will find a camera. Now I got caught with a camera. After a while I started banging the door because I had no cigarettes. A very nice woman opened a little hole and started shouting at me. I managed to get cigarettes. The were Russian. Horrible! My lungs nearly exploded.

      Later I was escorted to an office for interrogation. The offficer`s English was perfect. He was not very polite. He was shouting at me and called me a spy. I was not used to meet unpolite people so I shouted back louder the he did. Suddenly he was very polite and quiet and said: " If it would not be such a lot of paperwork I would hand you over to certain people. What will we see, if we develop the film?" " You will see some tanks. Nothing important. Please develop the film. It will save me money" I replied. He started laughing and told me that I must be a complete idiot. " Why?" I asked. " Getting caught photographing Soviet military equipment in a restricted area, starting trouble in the cell only to get cigarettes and shouting at a high rank Soviet officer without showing any respect to his rank. Only an idiot can do this."

      " You are correct, Sir. May I now go back to the psychatric hospital were I escaped yesterday, Sir ?"

      He offered a drink and a cigarette. ( My cigarettes!) During the following conversation I told him that I would like to know more about the famous Soviet army. He invited me to come when ever I have got the time to do it. A few drinks later he told me that we should be friends for ever. Good idea. We had a drink on that and he told me that his soldiers and officers are robbed by west Germans. They were selling cars which cost only some hundred Marks for some thousand Marks to the Soviets in front of camp. I promised my new friend to stop that. (I did stop it but had a lot of enemies after that) . When I left camp I had managed to get a sculpture of Feliks D. as a present and was taken back to that village, were my friends had a party again, by lorry and escort of 10 armed soldiers. There I invited them for a drink. In the gym of the village were we had the party, nobody dared to say a word until the soldiers were gone.

      I went back to the camp a week later and spent a few days there. it was the hardest time of my life.

      If you are interested I can write about it later. There was a lot of other contacts but not all of them ended that good.

      I have posted this to my friend in Russia and asked him to check it. He wrote back that I should write a book with the title "The Idiot and the Red Star"

      regards

      Frank

      (Hope it was not too boring)

    11. Hello,

      it is the Lazar Kaganovich

      Maxim Gorky Class

      Building started as project 26 and went into service 1944 in Pacific Fleet.

      Specialists say it is a heavy cruiser and not a light one. Perhaps Christian has got informations which I do not have ?

      Regards

      Frank

      As I said I am not good in naval things. I live more than 200 miles away from coast. So why should I know about an enemy who cannot fire at me.

      :cheers::cheers::cheers:

    12. I didn't have the slightest glue how to answer Frank's extra difficult question ... :(

      Hallo Christian,this was not extra difficult. When this all happened there was no internet like we have it today. It took us one day to find out where that happened.

      Just take a map of DDR. Find Schwerin. See what railway lines go from Schwerin. Have a look at a map with the airfields of GSFG. It must be that airfield near the main railway.

      My hint made it easier. Which Airfield was near the railway line Schwerin - Magdeburg ? There is only on.

      We did not have a hint that time. That was the reason why we were called intelligence or eggheads.

      Regards

      Frank :cheers::cheers::cheers:

    13. Hello Christophe,

      Congratulations Place and Regiment is correct. You are the winner.

      You imagination is understandable but not correct.

      Normally there were only a few jets landing at Borstel. Because the landing zone was near the railway they had to stop the trains when a jet was landing. This was for flight security. (have a look on your map.) "Strawberry" had the duty to turn the signal on red for the trains. The message to stop the trains came from the tower. In this situation there was no connection. I have got the incident book of that airfield from 1990 until the last day. The Soviets had a lot of problems with communication. ( I cannot post a picture of a page because I cannot uploade any pictures ).

      Unfortunately Cold War is over. So I can not offer you a job.

      congratulations again and now it is your turn

      Frank :cheers::cheers:

    14. Hallo,

      This Is my question.

      One day we received a sheet of paper on which something was written in cyrillc. when we got the translation from HQ one note was: Light does not work. No contact to "Strawberry" . Dangerous situation with goods train for Schwerin.( Mig 23). 10 MI -8 moved to C, 15 MI-24 at B, 12 MI-8 at A, 2 MI-8 at workshop. Rockets arrived 23.00. Date

      What we exactly knew was: "Strawberry" was a Code for an outpost which was for stopping trains when Jets were landing because over the railway line they were very low.

      What we could see in this Message was: There were no jets stationed because only helicopters were metioned .

      Where was the airfield and who was stationed there? Show the way how you got the answer. ( that will prevent you from guessing)

      Good Luck

      Frank

      :rolleyes::rolleyes:
