    1. I read in the Telegraph today that this country's MOD is descaling the Navy down to something the size of the Task Force sent to the Malvinas....
What a frightening thought... I do hope that in hostile times that this minor armada is going to be enough. This government wants everything on the cheap.
I think we're finished as the superpower we once were.
Remember Lord Cochrane , what a man! the man who created Chile.Genius.

    2. I believe that the term, "Forlorn Hope" , comes from the Dutch term, "Verlorene Hoop", meaning 'lost troop'. As there were large Dutch contingents in the British Army in the Peninsular War. I have never seen or heard of an example , though.
It could have been an unofficial thing of that era, or just something the Riflemen did.

    3. This chap was quite a chararcter by all accounts, and sounded very'intense'. He joined the police in 1929 and served most of his career in Airborne units. He was wounded no less than three times, during Eben Emael , Crete & Tunisia. He suffered a particularly bad head wound in Crete , shortly after landing , in action against the New Zealanders.
He died in a Car accident in 1943, in Germany.

    4. An extremely emotional subject. I have often wondered what would so many of those young men's fates , had their actions been in a later theatre or War.
I cannot help thinking that terrible mistakes were made. Young men in the trenches for weeks at a time , in terrible conditions , under constant threat of violent death, a long way from home, with no look forward.
Were they just victims of desperate times, used as an example to 'stop the rot' spreading. Your thoughts...

    5. Can anyone provide a comprehensive break down of the US awards system? How are they awarded ? Who decides? For instance inorder to be recommended for the British Victoria Cross you have to have had a 90% to 100% of dying.
I would also like to find out the facts behind the Purple Heart.
