Reverse of the Order.
No makers mark are evident, the stamp or engraving on the medal is "SILVER".

This Order is awarded to commands, units or branches and not to individual members of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
It is awarded for varied achievements over a period of time or for a specific single act or deed in the military fields for activities that positively contribute and/or result in the progression and development of the SAF.
This Order is intended to create healthy competition and esprit d' corps within the SAF.

Thanks Owain,
I will make a major effort to try and locate the archives here.
What were the qualifying criteria for the DSO?

Will

Hi Lorenzo,
It is the Order you are referring too.
I cannot remember what the costs were but it is a very early version.

This is a recent purchase of a very different group of medals that was found in the Sudan.
The group includes the Governor General's General Service Medal of 1933, the Sudanese Distinguished Service Order and a NAMED Governor General's Distinguished Service Medal.

Hi Brian,
According to the 1971 edition of "BRITISH BATTLES AND MEDALS", the latest edition is back home in South Africa, the 13th Sudanese Infantry was involved in some of the many battles leading to Kitchener's reconquest of the Sudan.
Members of the unit were entitled to the Khedive's Sudan Medal, 1896 to 1908, with clasps for "FIRKET, HAFIR, SUDAN 1897, THE ATBARA, KHARTOUM, GEDID".
Regards,
Will

They were very prominent on the East Rand and were led by former Anglo-Boer War and WW1 Boer commanders like General Van Deventer who died soon after the strike.
