    1. I helped a friend of mine to scan some of his old WW2 photographs in his collection.

We both cot really curious of the texts on the backside of some of the pictures.

I hope there is some friendly member who can help us with some Russian translation?

      Here is the first photo:

    2. This makes it even more interesting. Since Hungary was still a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in '99, who would have issued this medal? Surely not the A-H government! Who knows a little more?

      Hugh

Well, at this time Hungary and the Hungarians had a bit more equal rights then back before 1848. A lot changed after the The Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867.

      Another informative Wikipedia link: HERE

By the way, "Emlék Érem" Means "medal of remembrance" in Hungarian.

      Greetings

      Péter

    3. I was given this medal on a wrong ribbon (Belgium ribbon) and I need help IDing it.

      Doc Riley

I would say that it´s the 50th anniversary of the 1848-49 revolution. On the 15th of March 1848 Petőfi was the key figure in starting the revolution. Since then Hungarians have the National day of remembrance, this day.

Bem was one of the leading generals on the Hungarian side in this revolution.

    4. Well, I looked for this at many places and several sources shows that the leggings were the same colour.

In this case, the contrast between the leggings and the pants were so big, I assumed them to be darker.

I also looked at the poor quality of this poor soldiers uniform. There is a visible big whole above his left breast pocket.

So the pants might be used as well as his field coat.

Here is a photo I used to get some details right..

    5. It?s always fun to combine collecting and interest in digital computer work. Not long ago I bought a pack of old Austro-Hungarian military photographs form fellow gentleman IVER here at GMIC.

Scanning and working with the photos, my fantasy runs wild thinking what might have happened to the person and how it might have looked like the day the soldier went to the photographer to have his photo taken. I posted some digitally colourized photos here on the forum before.. Now that i have a lot of new photos to work on, all that can keep me away is my regular work and maybe my wife..

    6. Thanks for the great information !

Does anyone have a good photo of the medals mentioned in the thread?

Or the Hungarian name of it.

Would be interesting to see this quite rare medal.

Here is the obituary of the officer.

When he died in 1982 he was a Lt Col. in the air defence. He became 55 year old and was

      buried with military honours.

    7. Today i got this old photo of a Hungarian officer, which was sent to my grandparents in 1982 together with the obituary of the officer.

I guess he was some far away relative, friend or so, since he had the same family name as my grandmothers maiden name.

Now i wonder if any of You Gents, may have some more information about the uniform, medal or rank.

I am thankful for any answers!

    8. Peter> Thanks for trnaslating it... but.. he was awarded MVK in 1917... could it not be that he was awarded SMVM on ribbon of MVK?

      Well, that could absolutely be!

I did n?t understood exactly that part, but as you mentioned that he was awarded SMVM on ribbon of MVK, i now understand !

      Greetings!

      P?ter
