Gentlemen,
I took some better quality photos of this medal with my SLR but can't get them to upload successfully. The max size allowed for uploading is 8 mb and the image is 6.4 mb. What gives?

Thank you Stuka & Paul for your replies. I will try taking some better photos with my SLR in the next few days and post them. Paul, what exactly do you mean by the fault in the iron? Thanks.

Gentlemen,
Does anyone know what the correct ribbon was(is) for the Prussian commemorative medal for the Allies victory over Napoleon in 1813? I have been told that it was white with black stripes. The EK non-combatant ribbon? Thanks & all the best.

I need the opinions of the GMIC 'experten' on this question. I have the opportunity to purchase from my very dear friend of 30 years an 1813 EK 2. His trustworthiness is beyond reproach. He has been a collector for well over 50 years. He is slowly selling off some of his massive collection. He bought this 1813 EK 2 many years ago. The question is, is authentic or a fake? We all are aware that even experienced collectors can be fooled. What say you gentlemen?1813.zip1813.zip1813.zip

That is a wonderful group. The fact that it belonged to a member of the Alpenkorps makes it even better.

Outstanding painting on the Ney bust. The potrait painting is wonderful as well.

Thanks again for your much appreciated assistance. I got the high resolution digital image of Gerard's Ney from RMN via Art Resource, their North American distributor. Thanks to yours truly it can now be seen and available on the RMN website ($150). A professional printing company here in Grand Rapids reproduced 4 different 8" x 10" images for me on acid free paper ($125). They did a fantastic job. I then had it professionally framed by a woman I always go to for 'my stuff' (my wife says that I am running out of walls!-$300). The cost of the letter was around $550. The result of having a shadow of 'Le brave des braves'around our house-priceless!
The letter came from the collection/estate of Marshal Soult with provenance. It is a letter from Ney to Soult in August of 1809 in Spain. It has a great autograph and post scriptum. I'll try posting some images with my wife's assistance soon.
All the best,
Jay

Can any of you gentlemen educate me as to the details behind a Prussian (?) medal that was struck to commemorate the Allies victory over Napoleon in the Battle of Leipzig in 1813? It was a silver(?) oval shaped medal with the heraldic shields of Russia Austria, Prussia and Sweden on the obverse with the inscription "Suum Cuique" at the top and "Deutschland 1813" at the bottom . The reverse has the radiant all-seeing eye at the top and with the inscription (in German) "our God is our Castle".
I would like to know who struck it, when it was struck, who received it (combattants vs. non-combattants, etc.), ribbon type, current value, etc. Thank you.

Gentlemen,
I will soon pick up a framed letter of Marshal Ney with a high resolution print of Baron Gerard's portrait done of 'Le brave des braves' in 1805. It should be wonderful. It is a letter written in 1809 from Ney to Marshal Soult while in Spain. I love history.

Better late than never perhaps? Letter signed by Ney & d'Hautpoul, both casualties of the Empire.

Here is my Austrian Silver Bravery Medal 1813-15. Here is a good website dealing with Napoleonic Austrian Orders & Medals: http://www.antiquesatoz.com/napoleon/ausnapms.htm

Wow! That is a very impressive group. Do you know to whom it belonged?

Congrats! Now get the other three (1813, 1813-14, 1814) if you don't already have them. Then there is the 1863 50th anniversary medal........Enjoy.

If it is correct the unit part will be impressed exactly as "2nd Batt. Grenad. Guards." or "3rd Batt. Grenad. Guards."
At the time of the battle the two battalions present of the "Grenadier Guards" were known officially as the 2nd & 3rd Battalions, 1st Foot Guards. Then by the time the medal was issued the medals were all impressed with their new title of Grenadier Guards.
Thank you .

Thanks Paul. I did do a Google image search for ‘Waterloo Medal 1st Foot Guards’ and the ones I found all Grenadier Guards in some form, not 1st Foot Guards. I was surprised. But as I understand it, this regiment was given the title Grenadier Guards in 1815 after Waterloo. When was the medal issued in 1815 vis a vis the regiments new honor?

1813 EK 2: authentic or a 'shaver' (fake)???

Hi Trevor,
Thanks so much for your reply. I was fearful that might be the case. The reverse looks too much like my 1914 EKs. Could you please tell me what telltale signs lead you to your conclusion?
All the best,
Jay
