Hello. I picked this up today from a WWII vets son. It's a beautiful heavy piece with excellent detail, but I wanted to throw it out to those who know more than me about this subject. The edge photo is trying to show some sort of pattern that is around the edge. It's hard to capture on the camera and frankly hard to see visually. Looks like tiny symbols.
