Very nice, Chris! I have one of those commander's grade neck badges myself.

Here's a photo of the current version of the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice. It comes in a box with a small metal and enamel lapel pin. I had the pleasure of attending a speical Mass and dinner in Jacksonville, Florida on June 11 where the wife of a close friend and three others received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal and two men and a woman were made knights and dame of the Order of St. Sylvester.

The Crown Prince of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, Archduke Otto von Habsburg, died today at the age of 98. He was the eldest son of the last reigning emperor, Kaiser Karl, who ruled Austria-Hungary from 1916-1918. He was the last knight of a golden age. R.I.P.

The black and red chevrons indicate it's from the Kingdom of Württemberg. None of the references I have, which are very few, show this particular cypher so I can't tell you exactly which regiment it belongs to.

I suspect Colonial, maybe Boxer Rebellion? Or I may be tooooootally wrong.
Notice the one cockade.
The Photo was taken in San Francisco.
I also thought theater, but the Spiess way of carrying the book makes me doubt that...
Not sure, Chris, but my guess would be, if he's German, it's pre-1897 when the Reichs-Kokarde was added. With the cross belt, my first thought is he might be a dragoon.

Chris,
All I have is the 1914 Rangliste and there's only one Prussian officer named Chambeau listed in it and he's a Hauptmann with Pionier-Bataillon von Rauch (1. Brandenburgisches ) Nr.3. There is no Chambeau listed, either active or reserve, with Kürassier-Regiment Graf Wrangel (Ostpreußisches) Nr.3. Perhaps he was commissioned after the rangliste was published?

Hi,
on the 20th of feb 1915 "Hauptmann Holler", very likely of the bavarian 22 RIR was wounded (maybe died).
Can anyone add any meat to those bones?
Thanks
Chris
Chris,
I don't have any references other than the 1914 Rangliste. In it I find a Hauptmann Gustav Holler in the 17 IR who was born in 1877 and there's a Leutnant Alois Holler in the 8 IR born in 1883. There's also a Oberleutnant Johann Holler, but he is an artillery officer, and a Leutnant Viktor Höller who is also in the artillery.

What a fantastic photo, Joe! I love that mustache!!!!! Would you mind if I copied that and kept it in my photo file?

As far as the one hanging from the neck is regarded, it can be the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, so technically the Prince could wear it. Yet, the picture is too unclear to see the details.
I stared at the neck cross for quite some time. The British Venerable Order of St. John has a lion and a unicorm between the arms of the cross, I'm fairly certain those are fleur-de-lis between the arms which is used by the Catholic Order of Malta.

Thanks for posting this. There's some very heavy stuff in those citations!

Well, for one thing, he's wearing the Order of Malta at his neck, which I doubt he would have had since it's a Roman Catholic order.

The cypher looks to me to be that of the Mecklenburg Grenadier Rgt. Nr.89, I & III.Batls.
Chip
I'm fairly sure that's the Mecklenburg Griffin Order at this throat, so that would fit.

Thank you very, very much! I've saved that to my computer for future reference. :jumping:

Possibly Geheimer und Oberkriegsgerichtsrat Dr. Franz Medicus of X. Armeekorps? Collar patches look good for a Military Official and he appears to be wearing one rosette on the field officer pattern boards and a cypher (beamten shield)?
Regards
Glenn
I think Glenn may have found him. He is the only Beamten type Medicus listed in the 1914 Rangliste. He's listed as having the RAO 4th class, KO 3rd class, Landwehrdienstauszeichnung 1st class, Rote Kreuz Medal 3rd class, and the Albrechtsorden RK.

According to the Ehrenmal des preußischen Offizier-Korps, Major Kurt Gudewill was still serving with Feldartillerie-Regiment Nr. 9 at the time of his death on 22 August 1914 at Tirlemont. He was wounded on 18 August and died four days later. As he was not the commander of the regiment, I assume he was still commanding the II. Abteilung of the regiment.
Mike
Major Rudolf Rogge was commanding I./FAR 9 and Major Kurt Gudewill was commanding II./FAR 9. Major Erich Opitz was the senior Major or second in command denoted by the St (Stab).
Regards
Glenn
Glenn,
Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't thinking Abteilung but Battalion. I'm guessing artillery had Abteilungs instead? I made a guess that was what the I, II and St. stood for by the names, basically because all of the Hauptmann's listed had St., 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 beside their names and I was guessing that was battery/company or whatever they used in the artillery.

Can anyone tell me what position was held by Major Kurt Kaspar Adolf Gudewill, of Feld-Artillerie Regiment 9; KIA in Belgium on 22.08.1914 near Tirlemont?
Rang-Liste info? Anything?
Rick,
In the 1914 Rangliste there is a Major Gudewill, no first or middle names, listed. If I'm reading it correctly, and I may be wrong, he was the commander of the 1st Battalion. There are three majors listed and out beside their names and dates of rank is St. (Staff?), II, and I. Gudewill has the I by his name. He also had the Red Eagle Order 4th Class and the Dienstauszeichnumgskreuz.

This looks to be a scarce Lippe Detmold official death certificate... but to a man of the IR69....
Can anyone figure out how that connection works??
No idea, Chris. I thought at first perhaps the Prince of Lippe-Detmold might have been the regimental chief, but he's not listed that way in the 1914 Rangliste. Maybe the guy was from Lippe-Detmold but somehow ended up in IR69.
