    1. Someone made a real effort to convert a knight's badge into a merit cross by removing the enamel on the arms. Or perhaps someone tried to upgrade the merit cross and made a hash of the enamel.

The ribbon color should match the enamel color on this order, so the green ribbon is appropriate in this case. Officially, the ribbon/enamel colors reflect the nature of the services rewarded (I've never had one of the types with two-color ribbons, so I'm unsure of their enamel colors):

      Military merit: dark red

      Humanitarian acts: red and white

      Good conduct: blue

      Continuous service: white and blue

      Special services: green

      Other services: white

I've never seen any definition of what consitutes the various categories. In my experience, the blue ribbon seems most common, followed by green and red. I have a white-ribboned piece to a US Army officer who served as an attache in Havana in the 1930s.

hi i have a few pre castro orders if interested let me know will send more info etc. thanks greg
    2. I think the "ribbons" are a bit thicker and printed with a more "enamel" sort of surface than DDR paper ones. That shows most clearly in the chipping on the right edge of the Combatant of the Liberation on the 3 ribbon bar and the right side of the "XX" on the 4 ribbon bar.

When (oh happy day!) I have accumulated enough (can that day EVER come?) ribbon bars to have "common" duplicates... unsure.gif I may commit

speechless1.gif ribbon bar vivesection speechless1.gif and bend an end tab and jiggle some out to see what they are actually made OF. I can see the white reverses plainly enough through the "drain holes" in the reverses of the DDR brass hardware-- and these "ribbons" just seem thicker and glossier than East German ones.

I suspect they're sort of "plasticized" which would make sense so they wouldn't dissolve in the tropical humidity.

East German paper ribbon bars, in my limited experience, are TRULY wretched things that very often slip and slide one "ribbon" under the other. These are each individual ribbons--not printed in a single solid row--but seem absolutely "tight."

The trio with the Internationalist Combatant 1st Class has obviously been in the sun a LOT (Angola? rolleyes.gif ) so that the red has bleached right out of the RAF 1976 Jubilee and the IC 1st itself is quite pinkish BUT... not smeared blurring of ink that sweat/damp would cause if the ink RAN.

I think maybe each ribbon is some form of PLASTIC rather than paper.

But no unsure.gif "spares" to play Doctor Frankenstein with out of idle "scientific" curiosity. catjava.gif

    5. Orden "Mariana Grajales" is another order intended exclusively for women. It takes precedence over the Orden "Ana Betancourt". Sorry, the only image I have is a b/w photo of not too good quality.

The order has one class. The badge is a multirayed silver star with a gilt medallion in the center. The ring surrounding the medallion is green enameled.

This is what Decreto-Ley #30 says about it:

ORDER "MARIANA GRAJALES" is conferred to female citizens of Cuba, whose labor in any sphere of creative work would constitute an exceptional example of revolutionary or internationalist activity; or for extraordinary acts towards the creation of the new generations, for achievements towards the full incorporation of the woman into the society, for the development of the country or the defense of our motherland; to foreign female citizens whose labor in any sphere brings significant benefit to their nations or the humanity, always contributing to the crossing of international boundaries, and who distinguish themselves in defense of revolutionary ideals, anti-imperialist struggle and for the liberation and independence of the people.

hi, i have this order maria grajales for sale ifinterested let me know best regards greg
