My name is Kostas, I am from Greece. I have sterted collecting ww1 American medals and I have the following question: must pre ww1 medal have to be numbered in order to be genuine or there are cases were those medals were issued unumbered but are still genuine?
Secondly, are there any dealers from which I can buy them from
Thank you very much

Hi I am Kostas
I thought it would be a good idea to post my most recent purchase a Grand Cross set of the Order of Leopold I with full sash and in a case of issue. Being Greek I haven't seen many of those so I am very happy to actually get one of those.
The set is made by FONSON a firm in Brussels that doesn't exist any more. The sash badge is 70 mm and the star is 75 mm and it's date 1918-1951.
Now because I am a new member I don't have large upload capacity to show you the pictures . So I asked Hendrik to do that for me- so pictures will follow
At this point I have to say a big thank you to Hendrik for all the above information and his help
Kostas
... more to follow.

Hello Kostas,
Difficult to say, even with a couple of good pictures, but I don't think you have a copy medal there, probably a slightly later strike by a different manufacturer.
Cheers,
Hendrik
Thank you very much for your help

Hello Kostas,
... and welcome to GMIC !!! Here's one :
Best regards,
Hendrik
Hendrik thank you for the picture. It looks very similar to mine, however, my model is solid in the circle where the cross is-the cross in mine is enamel to. Is it possible to be from a different manufacturer? or is it a copy (I hope not)?

Greece - Devices to Greek ribbon bars
in Southern European & Balkan States
Posted
Hello everybody,
Here are some pictures from my collection of devices on Greek medals:
1) the Cross of Valor 2nd class 1940 type (with small crowns).
This award is very similar to the Cross of Valor for the WW1. The only differene is the addition of a bar with the date 1940. For every new award a small silver crown is added to the ribbon. Maximum three awards were allowed for each class.
As far as the Cross of Valor WW1 type is concerned new awards were denoted by small silver stars again no more than three for each class
2) War Cross WW2
This example shows 1st class War Cross (gilt crown) with 2 bronze and 1 silver crowns on the ribbon. It has to be said that this War Cross had 3 Classes:
1st Class the Cross suspened from gilt Crown
2nd Class the Cross suspended from silver Crown
3rd Class the Cross suspended from bronze Crown
I hope I have helped a bit..
