    1. the cuff title "1936-Spanien-1939" were issued for the Army and the "Legion Condor" for the Luftwaffe. Even though both are tradition cuff title, there are not destinated to the same service, and none of them were worn during the SCW but instituted on June 12 1939 for the LW (KG.53, FlakRgt 9, LuftNachRgt 3) and on June 21 1939 for the army (I./Pz.Lehr.Rgt, Nachrichten.Lehr.Abt.). As a tradition badge, all were entitled to wear it, without having taken part to the SCW.

      Nice photos and info jacques!!!

    2. I have interviewed some who served in North Africa. The Germans never knew what haoppened" plop.

I believe I read once that @ Monte Casino somehow the "word" got leaked that the the allies were going to use gurkhas in the next assault on some portion of the German lines that was being a particularly tough nut to crack and when the assault happened the German positions were found to be empty.

I do not know enough about the battle and/or the Gurkha unit history therein to know if it indeed happened but it certainly makes for good reading.

    3. This is what I have for possibilities for the Bright Red Secondary Waffenfarbe(that matches the arty waffenfarbe)

      1. Military Area Administration and Intendant's Servcie

      2. Agricultural Service

      3. Sound Ranging Service

BTW, I am using "Uniforms and Traditions of the German Army" vol 2 by Angolia and Schlicht as a reference for this thread!(Chapter 14!)

There was also an Artillery Ranging Beamte shown too for "bright red"...are these "bright red" or a crimson though...?

    4. Hi fknorr,

Yes! I got a couple of nice little medal bars, an award document a couple of the Mecklenburg campaign crosses and a real find - an 1871-91 Saxe-Altenburg silver merit medal! I have been looking for one of these for years; but have only been able to find the 1891-1908 model.

      So, a good show!

      Best wishes,

It was a good auction for you then!

      Congrats!

    5. It looks like I have been elected to give a report on the Thies auction which was held this past Saturday. So... this was the third Thies auction that I have attended - the last two (Dec. ?04 & April ?05) being the others.

My expectation that the market has been saturated was heightened by the relatively slow turnout for the Friday preview, until the last couple of hours when the pace really picked up. Attendance on Saturday may have actually exceeded that of the previous two auctions. More than once there were three telephones going at the same item. If anyone wants to take the time to do some counting, I think that we may find a lower percentage of unsold lots in this auction. Rather than something for everybody, it was more like somebody for everything

There were the to be expected ?gee whiz? items like the Black Eagle collar which went for 76,000 euro; but it should be noted that while it went for 52% over estimate, in my opinion, the real excitement was with the many ?lesser? pieces such as the Royal Hohenzollern member?s cross with swords which went for over three times estimate, the W?rttemberg Olga Order, again over three times the estimate and the Saxe-Altenburg fifty year decoration at over five times the estimate.

All in all it was a very successful event; but to me, most importantly, it reflected a strength of diversity in particular interests within the field coupled with an appreciation of rarity over glitz and glitter.

      Best wishes,

      Wild Card

Did you pick up anything for yourself?
