This is a commemorative 50 piaster coin that has been put into a frame. These are common in Egypt. (I have this coin btw)

I tried searching for it online, but to no avail. It was in the Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901 - 2000, by Krause, in the beginning of the Syria section. It is available at most public libraries. If I get a chance, I'll check it out and scan the page.

FOUND IT! ok not exactly the same coin, but they are designs for coins for the "Kingdom of Syria"

Could you perhaps be kind enough to post a picture of the coin that you have in mind?

From the original pictures posted it would seem that this badge came with two stars, which appear to be completely different from one another.

Here's how I read the larger ribbon bar:

Row one: Liberation Order with Palm; ??? (possibly Military Medal of Republic?); Evacuation

Row two: Independence; Victory; Long Service & Good Example?

Row three: ??? (possibly Palestine War?); ??? (possibly Mohammed Ali?); Army Day; ??? (possibly Order of Merit???)

Seems to be a fairly typical set of awards for a career officer from the 1940s-1970s. Because I don't see a October 1973 War medal, I assume the photo was taken before that war?

Hmm, that seems pretty accurate. My grandfather did serve in the 1948 (Palestine) War. You'll see it is more prominent, or at least easier to see, as the second ribbon in the second row, on the picture on the right with the "flat" ribbon bar, as opposed to the earlier, rounded one. Interestingly enough, the one on the earlier picture, the rounded one, has what appears to be more ribbons. I saw the actual bar once, which is in the possession of my uncle. I guess that means the other ribbon bar might still be around, I need to check with relatives.

The design on it looks very similar to a coat of arms/emblem on the very first coins produced for the proposed Kingdom of Greater Syria, which was ruled very briefly by Faisal I later of Iraq. The emblem on the coins was a seven pointed star (common motif in the Hashemite monarchies), crowned, and surrounded by a wreath of sorts. This is very similar to it. Perhaps a rare Greater Syrian royal order?

I wanted to know if you could identify some of the ribbons on my grandfather's ribbon bar. The actual ribbon bar is not in my possession, but I have photos of him wearing it. He retired as a colonel from the Egyptian army in the 70's.

I am new to this forum. With that being said, when I was in Egypt, in the historical documents museum in the former royal palace of Abdeen, I saw a brevet conferring Aracuania's order of the iron crown (i believe it is called) on Khedive Ismail Pasha of Egypt....just thought you might find that interesting :D
