    1. For more info about him is neccesary to write on military historic archive in Prag... I think they will have his service file... they only need name and date of birth... CS army.. it was little problematic, there was fight between legionares and "austrians" (officers and soldiers that served to the end in the KuK army)... of course it was a political fight :) and you can try to guess who won ;)

    2. ..from the photo is clear, that 1.Lt Bartoš served 4 years in Czechoslovak legions (four strips on his right arm)... And here some informations about him:

Bartoš Ferdinand, born 26.6.1884 Albrechtice, district Týn nad Vltavou (Czech Republic), last rank in AUstro-Hungarian army was Feldwebel in IR46, captured 6.11.1914 in Hubice/Dobromil, registrated for legions in Jelec (Orlova gubernia), entered legions on 14.7.1916 as a private in 1. rifle regiment of Czechoslovak legions in Russia, ended in legions 11.5.1920 as second lieutenant of regimental music in 1. rifle regiment and served in Czechoslovak army (at the time the picture was taken he already served in Czechoslovak Army)...

Here are many of photos of Czechoslovak army soldiers:

    3. Trooper, yea, I have a good idea they are both Czech. ;) But tossing it out there for the group to see if anyone has any confirmation or details. The guy in the portrait shot has a badge on his cap that looks very much like the Czech Lion cap badge of pre-WWII. Your button thread is further confirmation.

Only, his uniform lacks the collar badges seen on the soldiers in the group photo...

Motif continued after WWII with the communist state...

..it is not so simple... the cap badge with lion was in CZECHOSLOVAKIA used for a very long period... on the photo with 3 badges are not only pre WWII badges but also badge used after WWII till 1960.. the only difference is in the tails of lion... on preWWII badges the tails go up, after the war on side (to lion).. after 1960 was another type of shield used and also there is no slovak coat of arms on the chest of lion, but a mountain with a fire (as on the other photo... :) on the second photo of soldiers they have a collar badge wich can identify the brach of the unit.. some of those soldiers have on their breasts qualification badges :)
