"For Valour in the MVD" are they the new KGB ?
They are the police, used to be called militias. Rusty, can you confirm this? Are they still referred to as MVD or are they FSB now?

Actually I lied. I have another set of RF medals. Good conduct (10, 15 and 20 years service).

Danny,
It's more like a roadbuilder badge.
Thanks for posting the other medals that I don't have scans for.
There are a few more that I still need to post...
Rusty.
Thanks for the clarification Rusty. I have a 850 years of Moscow and a 60th of GPW. That's it for RF medals. I've also a 60th partisan medal on hold from Ron which I will get this month. Will be looking for more this year that's for sure.

Our police service has gone to the large Sgts chevrons on the sleeve of the tunic. The probelm is that we cannot find any data on the placement of the chevrons. How far above the elbow how far below the shoulder flash. Any data welcomed.
Hi Ray
We have had chevrons forever (OPP). Let me check when I am back to work on monday and I'll give you the exact measurements.

The Order with the green ribbon is the Order of Friendship. The other is the Order of the Sea Merit.

Friends,
If you allow me I would sort the items and place at some Russian collectors' sites, if nobody has done it before?
Dima
No problems by me Dima. Thanks

Thanks Dima. You gave me a good idea of what they were used for.

What exactly did this membership do? Propaganda?

As far as I`m aware we don`t wear Mess Dress, as we don`t have a Mess. The nearest thing I know of is our tunics, which are worn for Crown Court, or special occassions? Along the same lines, it might be of interest to note, that we rarely wear our medals either. Obviously we have the ribbons on our tunics, but the one and only time I`ve ever worn my medals in uniform was on my pass off parade!!! Which I think is rather sad, but I suppose unlike the military very few bobbies have medals, except the old LSGC and maybe a jubilee. The majority of other medals, will be military campaign medals!!
When was the last time, you heard of a bobby getting a bravery medal for instance, and yet the army seems to be handing them out like sweets at the moment!!!!! Oh I`d better get off my soap box, again!!!
Sorry.
As an add-on, we (in Canada) do not have a mess dress either except our commisioned officers (Inspector and above). We do have a dress uniform and wear it on occasions, like funerals (too many as of late ) and award ceremonies. As for medals, we do get Good Conduct medals but also a few get bravery awards like the Police medal for bravery, or the much coveted Canadian Medal of Bravery. Not that many recipients, but some, and of sourse UN Mission medals and the Canadian peacekeeping medal. While out on patrol, we don't wear the medals obviously but the bars.

Here is mine with a document dated 1946.

The Guards were born in the summer and automn of 1941 near Smolensk and Yelnya. because of the heavy fighting and heroic deeds, some of the infantry divisions attained the status of guards. On 21 May 1942, the Guards were officially recognized and a breast plate was introduced. The Guards were paid more than the normal troops.
Reference: Borisov's book
So, from what I was able to translate, it would seem that the division would obtain the Guards status for experience and combat feats.

Final picture.
As an aside, this one's in Armenia and the asking price is 1600 GBP
Correct it is bad. The mint marks are not at the correct place. Not a good copy at all.

Just purchased and received this badge. For your viewing pleasure. How would one be awarded this badge? Harvesting over quota I assume?

I find these "State Security Badges" fascinating. The intricacy of construction and the enamel work is right up there with what I know and love in Imperial german quality. This is a real minefield and I am trying very hard to learn as much as I can and really appreciate all your help and patience with my (seemingly) endless questions!
I'd buy the one Igor has, but the damages to his put me off. I don't mind the price and trust him to know his stuff pretty cold. My thing is if I'm going to own one of these, I want the condition to be the absolute best I can find.
Like I said, the guy in the photo looks a little too happy to be NKVD ;>)
The badge is tougher for me to gauge as there's so little available to me to reference it against. Thanks much guys! Run away, I shall!
Here is a website for you to view KGB/NKVD badges. It loads pretty slow but well worth the time. Will give you an idea of what the badges and documents should look like.
