Seeking information on what I believe to be an Italian Aeronautical Medal for the long distance flight by Italian pilots from Rome to Tokyo which took place in 1920.

Medal appears to be gold (“K18” on clip) with enamel. Medal is 34mm across and 30mm in height. (demi taille size)

Italian scrip noting Aviazione Italiana (Italian Aviation) on face

Volo Roma - Tokyo 31 Maggio 1920 (Rome-Tokyo flight 31 May 1920) on reverse along with Japanese script in centre of medal.

There is good information on the net concerning the flight and Italian long distance flying in general undertaken in the 1920’s. However I can not find any information for this medal.

Any comments would be appreciated.

I have an Italian medal which I believe is a bronze version of the Medaglia generica del Ministero della Real Casa (General Medal of the Ministry of the Royal house)

It appears to be post 1936 as it has the inscription “Imperatore”. The name of designer “E. CRIPPA” is visible under the shoulder, while at the right the maker's initials “S.J.” (presume for Stefano Johnson) are shown. Other than this I can not seem to locate any other information

Any information on this medal would be appreciated.

Brother has checked the medal weight and it comes in at 35 grams.

You mention French copies; where these made by the French authorities or by individual suppliers.

I would be interested if you had any more info to offer on French copies

My brother has asked for my opinion on this Baltic medal he has recently brought.

The medal is silver (has the right feel /weight to be solid silver)

The details are very fine and it has the correct marks for designer and marker. What I not sure about is the apparent thinning of the rim at 12 and 6 o’clock.

However on looking at some examples for sale on Ebay and other dealers it would appear this may possibly be normal for the Baltic medal

I have looked at some of the copies of this medal and many appear to be of very average quality.

Can anyone confirm that the apparent thinning on rim is ok for original Baltic medals?

Thanks for the information. The medallion was part of a small lot of items picked up on a local New Zealand web auction site. See the photo for some of the other items. The seller couldn't supply any information on where the individual items came from.

The medallion may have been award in New Zealand to someone in one of the various volunteer units or possible brought to New Zeaalnd by an immigrant.

The medal has proved to be interesting, its an American Campaign medal for the Spanish American War of1898. I placed a posting on the America part of the site and been helped by two members with details of the recipient and on how to locate a replacement ribbon.

The other items are a RNZAF cap badge, a NZ Machine Gun Corps sweet heart badge made from a collar badge and an Australian returned from active service badge which has a serial number that I'm currently looking into. Altogether it's been an interesting little lot of items.

Jeff - Thanks for the recipients name and unit. Much appreciated - 3rd Infantry would that be 3rd United States Infantry Regiment ? I'm looking at seeing if I can source his military records if possible.

George - Also thanks for contacts for supply of ribbon. I could only find one supplier on the net so far and for 4 1/2 inches the price was US $ 22. The ribbon was noted as being original ribbon so I'm not sure if that's a realistic price.

Question I now have is what's the best way to treat verdigris. There is a patch on the observe. I carefully removed some of it with a soften wet tooth pick. There's still a satin has anyone any ideas on how this could be treated?

I have just obtained what I presume may be an unofficial military competition award for a mounted unit?

The medal is sterling silver with hall marks noting manufacture by William Hair Haseler of Birmingham 1905. Medal measures 52 mm high by 32 mm wide. Appears to be a standard jewellers design medal.

Inscribed on front with "Bandolier Medal" on possibly a gold shield. On the back inscribed with "Won by Corp C Windram C.P.R. 16.10.07"

What I presume to be the unit abbreviation is not one found in New Zealand. Can anyone identify who "C.P.R." may be. And any information on Corp C Windram would be very helpful.

I would like to put on a replacement ribbon but intend to keep the original.

What are the thoughts of others - should I replace the ribbon?

I got this medal with a mixed lot of items here in New Zealand. The seller had no information on where they got the medal from.

If I have the original recipients name it may be possible to do further research on how the medal came to be in New Zealand

This Legion of Honour appears to be from the 5^th Republic (Post 1962?) but I’m not sure if its an original medal.

I have noticed the general manufacture of the medal is not as good as other ones I have seen. Also the inscription on both side of the medal differs from other examples. There appears to be no makers mark as well

It will go well with the other 1939 French Croix de Guerre I have, which is a struck version with Paris mint and "BR" markings on the edge of one of the cross arms.

I understand that the large numbers used for the year date indicates an unofficial reverses, often local 'in theatre' manufacture.

Were some of the unofficial medals cast or should I be worried about the medal?

See attached photos of a mystery medal. I brought this a number of years ago. Presumed to possibly be Slovak but not sure.

Obverse has script "Na Kon!" I've been lead to believe this has something to do with horses or cavalry. Not sure what significance the letters K J D Z have.

Not sure if it's a military medal or one for say horse riding.

Reverse has date 29 IV 1939. This date is close to the dates of a war between the Slovak Republic and Hungary which took place in March 1939.

But this is all guess work on my part.

Any information would be appreciated.
