    1. The numbering on mine. At 6-o'clock.

      Ed,

Yours seems to be a stamped serial number at 6 o'clock as most I've seen.

Apparently the exceptions are for those pinback recycle materials type, as the one posted by "fjcp" and the one on Dr. Battushig's book, C 05-R, with hand engraved serial numbers at the 5 o'clock position!

      Dolf

    2. Just an observation; most of the pinbacks posted in this thread appear to have a stamped serial number whereas mine and Dr.Bs both have hand engraved serial numbers at the 5 o'clock position.

The stamped numbers all appear to be at the 6 postition.

      Right! I noticed that!

Do we have more sub-variations here?!...

My displays already lack of space, and my wallet lacks of $$ for all these variations and sub-variations...

    3. Agree about the odd lack of numbers, you'd think something named after "Big C" himself would have been numbered! This means we'll never be able to link these back to people. Sad. Even the Title "People's" Badges won't be linkable, as they, too, are unnumbered. Just the lower-level Title of Merit badges hold out any research hope.

      Exactly! I wonder why! :speechless:

    4. I suspect many of the "primary medal harvesters" do not know what this one is, and it is really not as sexy looking as many others. What is represents historically is quite important, though it must have been issued in small numbers. Surprised by the low-level quality, with a very recent feel to it. We need to know more!

      :D

Well, I do find it pretty "sexy" looking :P

And I really love what it represents historically!

As for the quality, it's not as low quality as many other aluminium pieces!

Maybe it's not even aluminium, I just don't know! For such a small piece it's pretty heavy after all!

    5. Wish I had one . . . envy . . . .

Don't know why, but I haven't seen this one often offered for sale!

Another thing is I can't determine for sure what it is made of! It would seem aluminium, but it's pretty heavy if compared with other cheap aluminium pieces I have! That's why I posted it in the 1st place, asking if other Mongolian awards collectors had one of these, maybe some other member having one could help with the material it's made of.

Another reason to post it it's because I find it quite nice and attractive and amazingly haven't seen it posted on the rich Mongolian section we have here.

      Enjoy :D

    6. So . . . does this now mean something like this?

      Type 1.1 (screwback, numbered); Low = ??/High = 37

      Type 1.2 (pinback, numbered); Low = 4/High = 574

Type 1.3 (pinback, numbered, made of ?recycled? materials); Low = 77/High = 89

      Type 2 (screwback, unnumbered)

      Ed,

Why do you call the Screwback unnumbered type, the Type 2?

As far as I know, chronologically all screwbacks are older than all pinbacks. Am I wrong?

So, shouldn't the screwback unnumbered type be Type 1.2, then the pinback numbered Type 2.1 and the pinback numbered made of "recycled" materials be Type 2.2 instead?

      Just my two cents,

      Dolf

    7. Darrel,

According to Shishkov & Muzalevsky, the metal mass in gr should be:

      Platinium (Portrait): 2,75 +/- 0,3

      Gold (Order base): 28,6 +/- 1,11

Gold (Connecting link - whatever that means, I'm not sure): 0,004 +/- 0,006

      Silver (Order base): 0,753 +/- 0,029

      Silver (Connecting link again...): 0,169 +/- 0,015

      Total weight: 33,62 +/- 1,75

As for the karats: (This info is a bit confuse to me as I'm not sure I can understand all details, etc)

      Order base: GSrM 950-25

      Portrait: Pl99,8 and 99,93

      Connecting link: SrM925

      Solder: PlSr- 65

      Hope it helps.

Maybe other members with scientific background (physics and/or chemistry I guess) can help with all those symbols...

In fact I'd suggest we create a new thread only for terms, etc used for these awards, a kind of dictionary for newcomers (and some not that new ;) )

    8. Thank you.

Also, I tried to resize using XP and was able to locate "resize" which allows me to adjust the number of height and width pixels.

Question: what is the largest size that can be attached to a post? Is this height x width = max file size?

      Alanirvine

I believe that in your case, given the reduced number of your posts the maximum seize of a picture to post is 60Kb. After a certain number of posts (not sure how many but any Moderator can help clarifying this) the seize of your pics to post can increase to 110Kb.

      Hope it helps,

      Dolf

    9. Outstanding collection of Lenins Alan!!! WOW!!! :o Congratulations! :jumping:

As for resizing pictures, Windows XP can do it. Just right click on the original pic and on the list of things you can do, one is exactly "Resize Pictures". The rest is pretty easy.

I use Photoshop myself, as it also allows other things as crop, etc

    10. Well, I don't think enamel just dissappears, if it was ever there it would leave some traces.

We would see badges with half of the enamel gone, but not completely undamaged badges, with no traces of the green enamel on the leaves.

So I guess they exist with and without, ... oh no, another sub-variant, will this never stop? I hope not :cheeky::jumping:

      Jan,

So you confirm that in your Badge it's indeed hot enamel, and not cold enamel or paint?

      Thanks,

      Dolf

    11. I assume you mean the green color on some leaves on the right side of Jan's Badge.

In fact I just noticed that now that you mentioned it and checked on Dr. Battushig's book to compare. Both pics shown, either from J 04 as well as J 04b, don't seem to be green colored on that area!

      Personnaly I don't think it's a sub-variation of J 04b.

Either all these Badges would originally have that green color (maybe not enamel!) that with time simply vanished, at least in all pieces I've seen so far, in which case Jan got "one in a million", or none had this green color, in wich case someone maybe thinking originally there was a green color on the leaves decided to paint it on Jan's piece!

      Just my two cents,

      Dolf

    12. "For those orders with high SN, they might not be issued. So what range of SN was issued or these numbered orders have never been issued at all?"

That is JUST the sort of question we hope to be able to get answers for here, working among ourselves and comparing issued Orders Books for a serial numbers/awards dates data base.

It would help if we had anybody who could actually read Mongolian, too!

      Rick,

      A 23.4 ? about 3 or 4 might have been issued

      A 23.3 ? about 10 - 15 might have been issued

A 23.2 ? no more than 40 might have been issued

      Dolf

    13. Shouldn't we call Type 2.2 rather Type 3? I agree it is also a pinback, but seeing that the metal content is definately different I would opt for Type 3. What do you guys think?

      Jan,

      I agree 100%.

It's indeed a completely different type. The metal, the enamel (this one is cold enamel, not hot enamel as before) and the period, so definetely a type 3 instead.

      Good point mentioning it, buddy!
