    1. Thanks for the kind words Dolf

I didn't intend to give you free advertising...

But, more seriously, I've seen part of your work, so I know you'd be the right man for the job here.

I notice Chris didn't ask you a word yet, despite the fact you already told him a few times that you builds on contract for others... :P

Maybe you should let him know how much you charge for that particular WWI machine gunner, it might be a pleasant surprise after all, and it might also interest other non modellers here ;)

    2. Ed,

These Border Guards awards is one of those subjects that I guess I really like, among other Mongolian awards, so for a while I tried to get as many different ones as I could find. Only a few missing on this category from those listed on Dr. Battushig's book. As I believe other members have some of those I'm missing (such as E 02 and/or E 03) I guess we could have almost a complete data base here. Not mentioning the NIBs, for which I also have a couple of pieces.

      Starting with my E 01, S/N 927.

    3. Dolf,

I would be the first one to agree with you about my scans.

I am only just trying to figure this out.

I am using a Microtek, but I don't think that it is the scanner's problem. It's mine.

      Alan

      Alan,

Next time try a different background, either white (which is what Rick recommends) or if you don't like the white background try something other than black, maybe red.

I never heard about Microtek, but in your case your scans seem clear (I mean not out of focus, as it happens if I use my HP for 3D objects :banger: ), the main problem in your case is the size of the pics you post, and of course they are too dark probably because of your black background. It also happens to me when I use a black card as background, that's why in such case I must re-work the scans with Photoshop, not only to resize them but also to adjust brightness and contrast.

I just noticed a perfect scan of a McDaniel's COA you posted on another thread! That's an excellent one! ;)

      Best,

      Dolf

    4. Dolf,

Critisim accepted, when I get home from work I will try and get some better pics :jumping:

I dont like using a scaner because items tend toget lost in the whiteness :banger:

      Order of Victory

      OoV,

I also don't like that white/gray background I get when I scan my pieces, but in my case I guess that only happens because of my "pre-historic" scanner. So as you may have noticed I use some color card as background, either black (which sometimes makes the scans too dark and forces me to re-work them with Photoshop before posting) or red (which usualy gives a good result and most of the time I just have to resize them with Photoshop before posting).

Of course this is quite some work and takes much more time than just taking pictures with a digital camera, but in the end the result is in 99% of the cases better.

I really hope I can afford a new Epson one of these days. Damn, I really regret recently buying this multifunction HP which is only good for flat scans, but really bad for 3D objects! I should have tested it before! And I should have read Rick's advices too!

    5. Guys,

I'm sorry to say this, but your pics (OoV, Alan) are really bad! :(

Can't you guys please, please, please post pics like those posted above by Andreas? Those are excellent, clear and detailed pics! ;)

I entirely second Rick when he recommends you getting a nice Epson scanner!

Or any scanner that makes clear 3 dimensional scans.

Even my "pre-historic" Astra 1200P makes better scans than the pics you guys post! :speechless:

      Just my two cents,

      Dolf

    6. After long discussions on this topic with Bat in UB, I think we can conjoin D03a and D03b into a single Type 1 badge (low 14, high 975). The gilt is so thin (as on the Udarnik badge) that it often fades away.

      The case seems normal Mongolian.

      Nice one.

      Ed,

As I never had one of these on my hands, the two only possible differences I thought there was (from pics, here, on Dr. Battushig's book, and elsewhere) between D03a and D03b were:

      - D03a would be slightely bigger, mainly on the width.

      - D03a would have a different color on the reverse.

Anyway, thanks for clarifying this. On the contrary of most Mongolian awards it's nice to see there is one less variation :P

      Dolf

    7. Congrats Albert

      Apparently a D 03b on Dr. Battushig's reference book. Unless it's a D 03a! Honestely never really understood the real difference(s)

Yes, as far as I can tell from others I've had and seen, this is one of the usual Mongolian boxes.

    8. Anyway, according to my research, September 28 apparently has nothing to do with the Cuban Revolution, or nothing to do with "Bahia de los Cochinos", or nothing to do with Fidel or Guevara's birthdays ... honestely I just don't know, can't find nothing related to that date and Cuba! :( At least not on Wikipedia! :speechless:

    9. Here's a new one on the eve of collapse--

and as usual I have absolutely no clue what this was for.

I suspect from its lowly precedence that it was for kids "volunteering" for the harvest, or minimal duty in the rural militia or some such.

      Rick,

I saw it somewhere where it was called "Defense of the Revolution" Medal, or something of the kind.

But on Yuri Yashnev's site he calls it "Medal of 28th September", just don't know the meaning of the date.

    10. Le Gloan has the distinction of having shot down 5 biplanes in his total score - four Italian C.R. 42s and a British Gloster Gladiator. He was killed flying a P-39 with the Free French Air Force.

Thanks for the additional info, Michael.

    11. Andrew,

All right, thanks a lot

I thought it was a Curtiss, but was not sure and didn't feel like searching in those boxes for the building instructions (I believe I keep them all :P ). A Seagull, right, now it rings a bell :speechless:

Thanks a lot for the pics and the ID

      Dolf

PS: Oh yes, the 2nd aircraft is indeed the same as my model, wow! :jumping:

I believe the rear wheel is missing on my model and there is also another detail that doesn't match with the real one, a kind of "stick" that is between both left wings on my model but appears to be between the right wings on the real one.

Ok, time to watch a new episode of "Taken", I love alien stories :cheeky:

      Many thanks!
