I am new to collecting the 57 items and understand there are really 3 types of 57 items out there.

1. 1960's produceditems which show their age and are called "early" items.

2. Items produced after 1977 which are still considered 57 items but obviously not as popular as the 1960's items.

3. New made junk. Cast items, etc which have little to no real value to collectors of 57 items.

Have I missed anything?

I'm sure German jewlers made them in the inter-war years. They'd make anything you needed or wanted, it seems. Unofficial awards for a lapsed State posed no problems.

I believe this is a Zeiss Th Nivellierinstrument. An Land Surveyor instrument. The data plate on your optics show; Bal. Th. for Theodolit

Tank optics, especially for mid-war Panthers, would have a manufacturer code instead of the name on the plate.

Thanks for the input. My device has different parts than the type pictured and is painted the same color as the inside of the panzers of WW2. I will be sending photos of this device to Zeiss and the numerous tank museums I am aware of to see what they have to say. The Veteran I received this from gave it to me as a gift, I did not pay for it. Unless he was making up a "war story" just to impress me, I have to believe him. Besides he has passed away and further questioning is impossable.

I don't think this is a tank sight. I have owned a cased Germn WWII tank sight in the past and it was much bigger. They are usually marked Zfr. plus the model number. This is probably connected to an artillery battery for plotting fire. The Th. on the cover probably stand for Theodolit (Theodolite in English).

I agree with Gene on this one. I have had the opportunity to handle 3 of these (Signal, Flight, Flak - there is also one for the HG Div) and the detail and workmanship on the real ones is phenomanal. Since you are a tab guy like me I guess the best analogy is to think of a real high quality pair of collar tabs to a cheap set off of ebay.

Prices on these are in the low 4 figures...or whatever one is willing to pay.
