HI Stormrider, 

Nice bars.  Your Hindenburg Cross with the clips on the reverse is for mounting it to a larger multi place medal bar.  Single parade mounts were made with these backing clips so they could be attached to a larger metal plate with corresponding slits and a pin back.  The individually mounted medals were then mounted to this larger metal plate to create a large medal bar.  

I do not have a picture of one but it is similar to the ribbon bars of the same construction type.

Nice sets.  Good luck on finding a reserve pair of tabs, I have only seen one set (on the internet) in all the years I have been collecting them.

Hi Chris,

The medal bars are a complete fabrication. The combination of medals are impossible to attain and also not within the German regulations. A shame that these have been framed and attributed to someone. I would also assume that the 16 TDBs are a fabrication also.

As has been stated it is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If it has been buffed out the price would be less than what I stated, never the less it would be worth more than $15K, IMO. Is $20K a good offer, perhaps. I believe a European auction would be the best venue to see what this is worth.

In my opinion $15K would also be low for this goblet. I paid almost $11K for a "regular" silver ehrenbecher a few years ago. Additionally, Weitze has an iron one currently for sale at near $10K (and the estimates are there could be as many as 1000 of these ehrenbechers). A piece such as the one pictured rarely comes on the market and establishing a price based on other sales is almost impossible. This item is truly worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I believe in the right venue (Europen auction) and with the right interest this piece could go way over $20K - $25K. (I seem to recall hearing that one of these which was attributed in nice ocndition going for $30K, but I can not verify that). These Thor goblets are so exceedingly rare that only a top collector could afford it; and those are the guys who pay whatever it takes to get something in their collection.

Thanks for the info but I don't think this is my guy.

I see that the Navy lists 3 Delius, a Kapitanleutnant (the one you show), a officer cadet and a Leutnant z.s. Would you happen to have the awards listings of the Leutnant z.s.? The trophy I have came with a picture of a Naval observer briefing a group of aviators. It also came with some medals, EK2, EK1, Gallipoli star and Black wound badge. I am hoping the awards might help identify the right Delius. (Since the trophy lists the recipient as a Oberleutnant z.s. I am wondering if it might not be a post war piece....i.e. did the Leutnant z.s. Delius stay in the Navy after the war and get promoted)

Thanks for responding so quickly, The only information I have on him is as follows:

Oberleutnant ur See Delius (no first name)

His name appears on a trophy which I purchased (in the mail to me) commemorating a victory which occurred on 18 April 1917. It might be a boat he sunk or a ship.

I have seen 3 people listed with the last name of Delius on the Navy rolls, an officer candidate, a Leutnant and a Kapitanlautnant. Would the Navy Officer rolls have any info on him? Thanks in advance.

It's been a while since I have been here so it is nice to be back.

I am trying to find out some information on an Oberleutnant zur See Delius who might have had an aerial victory or ship sinking on April 18, 1917. I am trying to find out if he was awarded an ehrenpries for an event which occured on this date.

If anyone has any information it would be appreciated.

Great bar, Gary. Was the recipient a member of the Luftwaffe? I ask becuase I don't think I've seen the Italo-German Medal awarded to anyone in the Heer or KM.

Yes the recipient of the bar was a member of the Luftwaffe; Hauptmann Jacob Schmidt was a flak officer. The bar was part of a grouping which included his soldbuch and other awards. All were split up in an auction. I treid to get as much of the grouping as possible but was only successful on the bar. I did manage to print off the soldbuch from the auction sitre which shows his awards of all the medals on this bar.

That has some of my Wehrmacht uniforms on it. I've got five Luftwaffe, including a major general named to Johannes Schleich (which I'm still paying on), 5 Kriegsmarine (of which one is a Konteradmiral and service cap, which I will start paying on in June 2010 and finish in October 2010), and two Heer, including on Oberfeldwebel black panzer uniform (3 piece) with M38 overseas cap with pink soutache.

I never said that double chevrons were an indicator of a repro. The fake tabs we saw happened to have the double chevron, but I noticed about them that I did not like was the way that the eagles were embroidered as well as a few other traits. I love these flak musician tabs.

Well it is nioce to see all 4 of the tab collectors in one thread!

These tabs are fine. You will often see the band tabs in this pattern/from this maker sewn together. Not sure why, perhaps a small selection that was never bought and survived the war.

I have written about the double chevron in other forums but these are only my opinions. The theory that all double chevron tabs are bad was based on something that our on Paul wrote in another forum. A person had a repro uniform with the double chevron tabs which Paul noted were the same as a pair of tabs which were being sold on the e-stnad as original. The collective commnuity then drew the conclusion that all double chevron tabs are bad. In actuallity, this is not the case (at least in my opinion, and also Paul's).
