Figure almost every single officer (9,990 out of 10,0000 ) got a "bronze" (gold colored) Signum Laudis and that comes out about right. Silvers were much less plentiful only because I think many officers jumped over these to some other award like one of the Orders or the Military Merit Cross.
Back in 1966 Dr. Klietmann cited
Gold Bravery Medals = about 3,700
Large Silver Bravery Medals = about 143,000
Small Silver Bravery Medals = about 384,000
Bronze Bravery Medals = about 950,000
These were still being slowwwwwwwwwwwly processed for awards in the 1st Austrian Republic during the 1930s.
I have never seen figures for the "K" Large Silver and Gold just to officers, so I do not know if those are included in the totals above.
Unlike most countries, Austrian awards carried real BENEFITS. Recipients of the above medals received a monthly payment of 30 K, 15 K, and 7.50 K, carried over into Schillings under the 1st Republic and as far as I know continued right through the Third Reich and under the 2nd Republic until the last recipient had died. No monthly payments to bronze winners, but anyone who received the 1917 Karl Troop Cross was immediately allowed the right to vote at age 20 rather than the then-legal age of 24.
Many thanks Rick!!! interesting to know that the silver medals are not as common as its current market prices could suggest. although I suppose that they were manufactured in larger numbers than the ones that were awarded like is happen with other medals
I have never seen any document for the Bravery Medals ( awarded before, during or after WWI) so I assume that during WWI this medals were awarded by the authority of the Emperor.
do you know if during the 1st Austrian Republic they were awarded by the authority of President, Chancellor , etc???
hunyadi,
very interesting to know the numbers of Bravery Medals awarded to Hungarians, thank you! I assume that in the numbers that Rick post the Hungarian WWI awards are included????
Thanks again!

hello all,
I am wondering if there are any estatistics of awarded Austro-Hungary Golden, Silver and Bronze Bravery Medals and Silver and Bronze Signum Laudis Medals???
As it has been said before the Gro?e Milit?rverdientsmedaille was awarded thirty times.
Thanks in advance!

Yes. The Signum Laudis medals remained the basic awards for officers to the end. It is very awkward trying to sort out which Austro-Hungarian award was appropriate for what (rather like the Soviets later-- too many choices), but a Gold Bravery Medal ALWAYS required the absolute highest degree of bravery regardless of who received one, and the Large Silver Bravery Medal for officers was also an exceptional rather than usual award, while a Signum Laudis in either grade was nothing special for them.
Many thanks Rick!!!

Hello all,
This is an old thread but I would like to know if any of you could help me to correctly understand.
the Signum Laudis was awarded to officers as bravery medals until the Golden Bravery medal and an Silver Bravery medal 1st Class for Officers were created??? if it so the Signum Laudis were continued to be awarded after the institutuion of the Bravery medal for officers???
Thanks in advance!!

Very well done Antonio! perhaps you want to add this national order:
"Orden del libertador de los esclavos Jose Simeon Ca?as" this is the second order in importance, just behind the orden Jose Matias Delgado.

Humberto-you mean medals are worn chronologically? Why don't El Salvadoran medals go first?
Jeff,
you are correct, the medals are worn chronologically, it has always been that way. however some officers do not follow the regulations and they use the medals in incorrect form
Do police officers wear ribbons on their uniforms? Are those metal as well?I'm going to have to derive a new way of illustrating ribbon bars if there are no cloth ones. Eeek!
Megan,
yes, the police use ribbon bars too and comes in metal.

Very nice, Antonio.
Humberto has sent me some pictures, so I think it will be El Salvador for September's country of the month!
Quick question: do the 'ribbon bars' like the Fighter one ONLY come as metal & enamel or is there a cloth (ribbon) version as well?
Megan,
all the bars of my country comes only in metal ( 35 mm). at least for the armed forces I have never seen any cloth version (the national orders are civilian so they do not have ribbon bars) . the only ones that are used in cloth are bars of foreing decorations awarded to officers of my country.
for example, in the next image, the first ribbon from left is a decoration from Venezuela, next a decoration from Taiwan, both in cloth and the last one is the Fighter bar, in metal.
