    1. Gordon..in the U.K. these guns (MG08/15) are anything between £4000 and £6000 dependant on where they are for sale, i.e. private or dealer, and these are for deactivated ones ! they rarely come up for sale , and when they do, they are quickly snapped up !.....I do not know of one for sale at this moment in time (in the U.K.)......"Wharton Militaria" was the last one I saw for sale, about six months ago.... Even restored "ground dug" examples fetch upto the lower price I have quoted, obviously dependant on condition.

      Prost ! Steve.

    2. Come on Gents, have you no BW/West German helmets to show !, do not be shy........

Here's some more to be going on with....an M85 derivative of the M62 stahlhelm, in 1981 most M60/62's were upgraded with a new interior this included a plastic neck shield....the upgrades culminated in 1985 with a three point harness, similiar to the Airborne helmet but with canvas strapping...here is my M85 with "Flecktarn" cammo cover, I also show my three cammo covered M59 (FJ) M85 and M826. helms with "Amoebatarn", U.S. "Woodland" and "Flecktarn" covers.

      Prost ! Steve.

      Prost ! Steve.

    4. Does anyone know why the BGS retained the WW2 style of helmet, where the armed forces adopted the more American patterns?

The Bundeswehr was compelled to adopt a U.S.style helmet and stop the use of the Model 1956 "Splittertarn" Pattern combat uniform to avoid associations with the Third Reich. Yet the BGS, with a highly visible border security duties, wore the variations of M35/40 (M52/53) until the early nineties when it was replaced with a riot helmet. It also employed the Third Reich inspired cammo "Sumpftarn" well into the 1980's, and yet nobody raised an eyebrow !

It has been suggested that it was economics and not politics at play in the equipping of the BW. The BW had to build an army of 500,000 men, in a short time frame, so perhaps Roemer and Linneman & Schnetzer, the main producers of the M35/53, were not equipped to produce such large quantities of steel helmets. Maybe, as it has been suggested, it was easier to make use of the many U.S M-1 style helmets available in great quantity in the aftermath of the Korean War. Many of these helmets were produced by Belgium. What better way to appease bad feelings of World War II, than to award your neighbor with a defence contract. The same has been said of the BW's Model 1956 battle dress. It was difficult to produce and manufacturers could never hope to keep up with demand.

The BGS numbered no more than 16,000 and would never serve outside of Germany. Why not use the remaining stocks of M35's/M42's supplemented by newly produced examples to equip a small border protection force in need of a distinctly German uniform.

      Prost ! Steve.

    5. Gents....a thread to show off your West German helmets, steel, Kevlar or otherwise....BGS, Polizie or Bundeswehr ! I will kick off with a couple of mine, M1A1 LL or M59 FJ with and with out an Amoebatarn cover and the humble M62, enjoy and please add to this thread.

      Prost ! Steve.

    6. Paul, my "Wachbatallion" tunic is dated 1982, and is a normal quality service tunic, with normal attached shoulder straps (i.e. sewn on to a tab)......the tunic you are talking about have been around in surplus stores for a couple of years now at least, at around $10-$20, they are superior in quality to the older jackets, such as mine, they are parade quality, they come from around the early to mid 1990's...and as such have hand embroidered armshield, bullion cufftitle and removable shoulder straps, as you state, the shoulder straps are always missing ! there lies the problem, the shoulder straps are nigh on impossible to obtain........The new BW service tunic does have removable shoulder straps, they are expensive ! at the moment.

      Prost ! Steve.

    7. The hand embriodered beret badge can be worn by both Officers and NCO's...however the order "ZDf 37/10" does not differentiate between "Unteroffiziere ohne (without) portepee" and "Unteroffiziere mit (with) portepee", so I assume that by NCO, it is above and including the rank of "Unteroffiziere". There is also a "machine embroidered" beret badge available for purchase by all, manufactured by makers like "Raer" ....more robust than the hand stiched variety, by all acounts ! Here are their wares....

      Prost ! Steve.

    8. Grant.. your "Martin Steglich" tunic is a superb example, I love these tunics with embroidered insignia, especially the rank stars ! however the Verbandsabzeichen (armshield) is not for the 5th Panzer Division...same design but with a red border, is for "Panzerbrigade 14" Neustadt/Hessen, and Kev the armshield you show is for "Panzerbrigade 15, Koblenz, as it has a yellow border. Armshields for Divisions have a black/white borders.

      Prost ! Steve.

    9. The quality issue is the same on these shields as on other 57er's, the finish is better on earlier pieces, I have what I believe to be an early "Krim" shield with a an "antiqued finish" and four pins on a blackened rear.....also these shields are generally two thirds the size of their TR counterparts, and never came with any form of backing plate or uniform cloth ! infact they were only authorised for wear in the Bundeswehr on a ribbon bar...here is mine.....

      Prost ! Steve.

    10. Paul, a slip on piece of coloured litzen to show arm of service, i.e. pink for Panzer, yellow for signals etc....usually, but not always, worn slipped over shoulder rank slides on combat shirt jackets....I have even seen them slipped through the air vent grommets on field caps ! They are Pink on these slip ons.

      Prost ! Steve.

    11. Gents, a new aquisition...A superb Alter Art Hellgrau uniform to a WW2 veteran, with attached 57er ribbon bar showing the following medals/awards, Kreta cuffband, 2nd class War Merits Cross for combatants, 4 year service medal, a post war sports badge and lastly a Bulgarian "Order of Merit". The uniform has Golden yellow waffenfarbe for Panzeaufklarer. The shoulder boards have embriodered stars/pips which is very unusual to see on a service tunic. The tunic comes with a matching pair of trousers these too have golden yellow piping to the outside seam. There is a name tag, but all to often in these tunics the name has been removed, the tailors label however is still there, "Georg Schweda". It is alledged the tunic at some time was stored in a BW depot....a slip of paper found in the inside breast pocket gives the details, naming the owner as a "Hauptmann Graff von Saurma". The set is complete with its "Bundeseigentum" hanger. please see photographs for details and condition. I suspect this tunic is as new, and has not been worn...a spare ? notice the lack of an armshield, there is no evidence as there ever having been one....not assigned ? or for use on the cusp of regulation changes, 1962/63.

      Prost ! Steve.
