G'day all.

I asked a question a couple of weeks ago about the number of CdeG awarded.

Not surprisingly, given the relative obscurity of the question, no one was able to come up with a definitive answer.

However, I recently purchased a book entitled:

90^e Anniversaire de la croix de GUERRE actes de la journÉe d’Études organisÉe au musÉe de l’armÉe le 16 novembre 2005

published by the Service Historique de la Défense.

This book indicates that during World War One 2,055,000 croix/citations were awarded, including 449 to units. For World War Two, the figure given is 250,000.

I'm not sure if the number is for individual croix or for citations, although I somehow suspect the latter.

2,951 awards of the Croix de Guerre with Palm were made during World War One to communes and villes, while 1,588 such awards were made for World War Two, at various levels (the level of award apparently based on the degree of contribution to the war effort and/or suffering endured by the honoured community.

Unfurtunately, there are no numbers given for the Croix de Guerre TOE.

I dont think it is possible to say as there were no central records (that I am aware of..)

As the "lower grade" could be awarded at regimental (and in some rare cases battalion) level, it would hinge on th epossibility that the totals were reported to a central office who kept score.

Then there is the complication of ... how would they be counted? I have 2 groups where the men each had 7-8 stars.. for these two men alone you would have 15 awards reported in the statistics... but in fact it was 2 men, each with one medal (although in total awarded 15 citations)... gets complicated for whoever whould have kept the records...

Very good point! Hadn't even considered it. I've been thinking in terms of awards to Australians (207 for WW1 and 41 for WW2, all known) and hadn't actually thought outside the box!

I think I might go with 'Lots! Total unknown.'

Like your Legion piccies BTW. Toyed with the idea myself years ago, and also went through the entire motions to join the Rhodesian Army (talked out of it by the chick I was engaged to at the time, so I re-enlisted and then she promptly dumped me - bitch!). Still, no regrets, 26 years in the Australian Army, all good.

G'day all.

Does anyone out there happen to know how many C de G were awarded in both World Wars and (he asks hopefully) how many C de G TOE have been awarded to, say the end of 2009?

Rough figures are fine, but I would obviously like as much precision as possible and names of any references used.

I am trying to anticipate questions for a major presentation on the history of the C de G that I am working towards in October, and I am sure this one will come up.

I am seeking a Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross fourragère for inclusion in a display I am putting together for an upcoming medals conference here in Australia.

Does anyone know where I can lay my hands on one? Replica is fine, although the dinkum item would be preferred.

I think it is called "a boule" or "ball mount",

If you are lucky you can pick up the odd one at shows, otherwise you can buy new ones from some french companies, they lack the patina of course...

what is the item that is used to suspend French medals, i.e. the bar with balls on the end (I presume the balls either screw in at each end or one end screws on to rod that is pushed through a hollow tube?)?

I can scan you pics of my CGDs at any resolution you require... But as far as ribbon devices go (star & palms), they're already on and won't be interchanged... If I broke a prong switching them I'd cry...
