Hi all. I was always under the impression that a correct diamond pin will have a "fish scales" look to the red enamel. Is this a standard or does it vary and the red have a more solid appearance?

The majority are the "fish-scale" appearance, but originals with solid color do exist.

So if you run across one with the solid color how do you know that it's not a postwar diamond? What do you look for?

A hands on inspection is a must. It's not so much what it looks like but how it's put together into the handle. There are clues.

But like many items .. there is always a risk things have been messed with post war.

This is a youth diamond pin. I couldn't tell a lot from the photo. It looks right from what I can see. I asked if it had the fish scale look and he said it did not but he felt that it was a good one. But, as you say, I need to inspect it.
