Guest Rick Research Posted April 28, 2007 Posted April 28, 2007 It's interesting to note that these naval designations have passed into modern usage as NEGATIVES--what could be worse than something that's "third rate?" Why, something that's "fourth rate," of course!And yet these ships were HUGE! Maybe because up here, anything with 12 guns then was considered the contemporary equivalent of an aircraft carrier. Poor old "Suffolk" must have been in tough shape, in tropical waters after more than 25 years in service. No further trace of the Captain or his Admiral?
