S. Africa in WWII

Hello lads. Can anyone tell me the status of South Africa in WWII? Were they part of the Commonwealth? Or were they independant? What about Rhodesia as well? Ignorant Yank here, assembling curriculum for a history unit on WWII for the kids in my program. Thanks much.
