Mervyn Mitton
I woder if any member can help with more info. on this knife - which I have just purchased. The photo is a little dark, so, details as follows - about 10 inches overall, heavy and with Br. services broad arrow and - presumably - the man's name and number (next photo.) I did not get a sheath or, a frog . Is this a standard issue - like the old WW" folding knives - or, is it for a specialist unit. Thankyou for any assistance.Mervyn

leigh kitchen
RAF survival knife, I had 2, I gave one to forum member Norstrom some years ago when we worked together in Bosnia as he fancied it for his diving, & I still have one that I carted around East Timor simply because it had a nice heavy wide blade that you could use like a hammer & it made short work of coconuts - about as far as my survival requirements went, hammering things that did'nt work properly & slaughtering coconuts. And cans of lager. There is a scarcer version which only has 2 rivets to the scales on the hilt. Mine were both dated early 1980's I think. The sheaths were fairly strange in a way - brown leather with a stud fastenng on a retaining strap & chromed rivets along with the stitching I think. They just seemed rather flimsy & not very "soldier proof" compared to the knife itself, kind of civilian shoddy stuff. Mervyn Mitton
"Ask - and ye shall receive !"Leigh, Thankyou so much for that info. - greatly appreciated - and the speed of the reply !!I paid Rands 100 = approx.?7 - does that seem reasonable? One other question - were they issued individually - as per name and no.on blade and , to everyone overseas?Again, thankyou. Mervyn
Richie B
I know the question is a bit old but no-one seems to have answered it.The number 5110-99-127-8214 is the NATO stores code.J. Adams is the manufacturer.Standard issue knife - quite uncomfortable to use for heavy and prolonged work.RegardsRichie
Mervyn Mitton
Thankyou Richie - Leigh had identified it very well - , but must have missed my question. When you say NATO - does that mean it is a standard pattern to all Forces ? Welcome to the Forum. Mervyn

MervynMervynAs far as I know it was (and is) issued only to British forces. The Nato number is part of a standardised stock control system.More here:-NSNThanks for the welcome - glad to be able to contribute something.RegardsRichie
