Mervyn Mitton Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 I thought this nice model of HMS Victory might be of interest. I bought this on a trip to Mauritius (can't remember the spelling - age !) some years ago. The island is famous for making model ships for all countries and , they get the original plans to make them to scale. I don't know of any visitors who don't come back without at least one.I won't give Vicyory's details - I'm sure other members in this section will know more.
Guest Rick Research Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Superb looking model-- how big is it?(And how did you get it in your luggage?)
helen Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Yes, beautiful model and to echo the above post, how did you transport it in one piece? Interesting that Mauritius was famous for model ship making - I didn't know that.
Mervyn Mitton Posted May 11, 2009 Author Posted May 11, 2009 The overall length - stern to bow sprit - is 30 " ( 74cm). I actually brought several back as gifts. They make a special strong cardboard case and they travelled well. The business of making them is a major one for Mauritius and they export all over the World - but, much cheaper on the Island. (Just costs an arm and a leg to get there!)
Mervyn Mitton Posted May 31, 2009 Author Posted May 31, 2009 I had forgotten about this frame of 'cut-outs' for H.M.S. Victory. They also came from Mauritius and the work is of a high quality. Go quite well with the full model. There is also a cut-out of the USS Constitution -I will post this another time.
Mervyn Mitton Posted July 3, 2009 Author Posted July 3, 2009 I was looking back over some old posts and had a 'flash' of memory' !! When you are facing Trafalgar Square - with the National Gallery behind - there are two large glass lanterns on either side of the square - the side that will be nearest to you. These are the stern lanterns that were on Victory during the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson's tomb is in the crypt of St.Paul's and most of the bronze on the monument is from captured French guns from the battle.
helen Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 (edited) Fascinating! I will have to look out for those lanterns next time I'm in London...Helen Edited July 3, 2009 by helen
