HeikoGrusdat Posted September 1, 2009 Author Posted September 1, 2009 I think this one is a bit better than N°1...
Guest Rick Research Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Born Berlin 11 April 1843, died Freienwalde 31 December 1909. he retired in 1885 as Kapitän zur See and was nominally "z.D." 1893-1909 with Charakter as Konetradmiral zS 5 September 1909, so I have no sources old enough to show his awards in full. During the 1866 war he was a watch officer on the gunboat "Cyclop."
HeikoGrusdat Posted September 1, 2009 Author Posted September 1, 2009 so he was Konteradmiral for 3 and a half months.... poor guy........ but why was he z.D. for that long time???
Guest Rick Research Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 I don't understand these strange German "wet" civil service jobs, but his "naval" title was granted while he was Küstenbezirksinspektor Küstenbezirkamt II (Pommern-Mecklenburg) AND "Ständiger Beisitzer des Kaiserlichen Oberseeamts, Berlin." Many retired bnaval officers seem to have had jobs like this-- but I have no clue, from an American coastal perspective, what they actually DID. We have harbor masters and Coast Guard stations... but what was an "Oberseeamt?" Did he weigh fish? Tidy up sand dunes? Check ships' log books for smuggling? Clean lighthouses?.... :banger:
